Leaking oil!

My 1989 Aero is has been leaking oil for a while, and just now it's starting to get worse. It's leaking out two quarts of oil in a period of about 1 1/2 weeks, and it's really becoming a nuisance, especially with the mess it makes. Anyone know what I should do about this? I heard that if you tighten the gaskets or oil pan it can make the leaking worse, and changing the oil pan is a pain. At least, that's what I've heard.

Any tips?

What size of engine? Where is it leaking from? How many miles, and has it ever been rebuilt?

I have a 3.0L. I'm not quite sure where it's leaking from, but I do know that it doesn't leave pools of oil, more like strange patterns. I'll have to really look at the pan to see where it's leaking from. All I know is that it doesn't look like it's coming from the engine. The engine has never been rebuilt. It's been through a hell of a lot of miles, I'd say at least over 200,000.

Just a shot in the dark maybe you can check the seal in the front of the crankshaft, crankshaft seal.Good luck

With that kind of mileage, I'd say both your front and real main seals are shot. If the front seal is bad, you should see oil coming down around the back side of the Harmonic Balancer. If the rear seal is bad, you should see oil coming down the rear of the oil pan and the separator plate between the engine and the transmission. In any case, it meant a trip under the car, looking up.

Well, taking a closer look, it seems like the seals are pretty much shot. I'm guessing here, that I'll have to get a new gasket and then re-seal. But I've heard it's a pretty hard job. Is there any way to make it easy?

Hi razor-jim

Wish I could say yes but the only thing I can say is make sure it's not the crankshaft seals,Copper explains it well. Believe me that is a bigger job, hopefully it is the seals around the oil pan even if it is a challange I believe it's easier.Keep us posted.

My 90 3.0L started leaking oil at about 120,000 miles. Turns out to have been an oil pan gasket. I would check that first.
