Transmission question

Long time, no posts.. (truck's been running fine I guess.. heh)

ANyway, the other day I was driving around and a combination of two things that don't normally happen, happened.

Info: 131,000 miles on AODE (4R70W) transmission.

When I got the truck I had OD shudder, but changing out the fluid at 125k miles had alleviated that issue.

I was backing out of a parking space and accidentally threw it from Reverse down to Drive while I was coasting backwards.. Not too fast, but I make a point to never do that.

Anyway, then I had a near miss about 30 seconds later with a car that blew a red light.. I gunned my truck (like I never have before) to get out of the way.

Anyway, the truck's transmission now makes a squealing noise occasionally at moderate throttle at about 40 mph range.. It stops once it's in overdrive.. But it's not a function of the shift TO overdrive, I don't think.

Anyway, have any of you had this happen. I can hear it really clearly with the sliding rear window open. Almost sounds like what a slipping fanbelt sounds like, but more mechanical, like metal on metal..

It's got me scared because I have to move here these next two weeks and need a hauler

What could be the causes, and also how long will this thing last if I just drive it to mechanical failure? I treat the truck pretty nice normally.

Sounds like torque converter to me... but I'm certainly no tranny expert by any means. You might want to try to post this in the Transmission forum. I'm sure they'll be lots of suggestions. Good luck!!!

Could be u-joints. They sometimes make funny noises when they are starting to go out.

Put your truck in neutral and put on the parking brake or block your tires. Crawl under your truck and grab your driveshaft. Wiggle it back and forth and watch your ujoint. Is there any play in it? Check both of them. If there is any play then replace as required. Good luck!

U-Joints is a good guess too.. I think I'll go check them now, because this noise could very wel be coming from one of them.

what's weird about my transmission is that I get a ticking noise (ie: it doesnt' sound healthy) at certain speeds or under heavy load.. maybe it could be the U joints too.. but typically it starts right at 75 mph, full time. you can hear it ticking right before it does a shift at higher RPM usually.

I think I just need to face the facts that the thing went 125k without a fluid change and could fail at any time.. So far it shifts smoothly though. It hasn't squealed in the past 2 days of hauling stuff either.. Maybe my 'being nice' to it helped to alleviate the problem.

Who knows...
