V-10 Trouble Code???

On a 2000 f-250 with a V-10, the "check engine light" came on. The truck was taken to an auto parts store to test codes and it said "po171 too lean bank 1" and "po174 too lean bank 2." Any ideas what this could be??

Thanks in advance for any help.

I just went through those codes on 2 V10s I've purchased in the past 6 months (I'm a wholesale dealer here in AZ). Check 1st for a vacuum leak. The rubber hose (about $20) that goes from the passenger side valve cover crank breather up to the intake tends to split where it does a 90 degree bend right up at the intake. Some have said that EGR sensor (about $50) could cause it too but my most recent truck had a fuel pump that was dropping pressure and had to be replaced ($192pump + $185labor). Good Luck.

Thank you very much for the response. We'll look into these possibilities.

Mark, you were right on!!!! It was a vaccuum leak caused by a crack in the 90 degree bend. Many thanks.

This is a common problem on 99 thru 01 models. It may start showing up the the newer V10's before long. That 90 degree ell is made of some sorry stuff.
Also, you can't tell by just looking at it - it collapses during acceleration.

Interesting...Sounds like it needs some re-enforcement in the rubber to stiffen it. It's probably failing from bending fatigue.

I think it's mainly the material quality and not structural design. I put a straight hose on after the collapse, but it was a bad idea. I went ahead and put another OEM part on for now, but will probably find some other solution (SST Ell, maybe) with an adapter hose to put on next time.

Baja - I could take mine and put my finger into to and it stretched about 2" after it failed. It was like a balloon.
