I own a 1994 F-150 4x4. It's got a 4.9L with a 5-speed but I'm coverting to the 5.0L (I am keeping the 5-speed). My truck has 3.08 gears but i wonder if i should convert to 3.55 or maybe even 4.10 gears. What gears would be best for my truck? I am looking for acceleration.
I forgot to specify that my tire size is 31x10.50 but this summer I might buy 33x12.50 tires. I would also like to know which would be a better rearend- slip or posi. This is my daily driver and is mostly highway driven.
The gear ratio you want is dependent on how you will use the truck. 3.55's will work with the 31" tires for most kinds of driving. 3.73 will give more pulling power/acceleration but will cause your engine to spin at a higher rpm for a given speed and you may lose some gas mileage on the highway. You do have overdrive so you should be ok with it. If you go with 33" tires, the 3.73's will work for most kinds of driving, and the 4.10's will give you more pulling power/acceleration.
'Limited slip' is the same thing as 'posi'. Positraction is just GM's name for a limited slip differential. Limited slip diffs are better than a standard 'open' diff for off road driving and are well-mannered on the road as well. They are offered as a factory option on most trucks. If you are doing a gear change, it is a good idea to put a limited slip diff in the rear axle while you're at it if you drive off road.
