I have access to both a 428 and a 460 which are in marginal condition. How do these engines compare as far as reliability and fuel economy in stock form. I'm not sure what year the 428 is because it's currently in a 2wd shortbed and the 460's from a marine application. I'm working on a fairly tight budget (i'm in college), so any suggestions would be appreciated.
The 460 might yield a hair better fuel economy. The 460 is cheaper to repair and add aftermarket parts to, but both are very good motors. Can't go wrong with either one. Just my opinion.
Since the 460 was a "marine application" I would check the inside of the block and heads for the amount of rust present. All the marine motors that I've seen coming through my friend's shop have lots of rust in the water channels of the block and heads.
One other point I forgot to bring up is installation. If the truck you are putting the motor into came with an "FE" motor (352, 360, 390, ect...) it might be cheaper to get the whole project done using the 428. Other than the flywheel, the 428 uses the same parts and has the same bellhousing pattern as the other "FE" motors. Being a basically "bolt in" motor will save a lot of time, money, and sanity in the installation of the motor.
check to be sure the 460 isn't a reverse rotation engine. i ran into this on a 289 in an old cris-craft.
i think you would be happy with either engine. go-fast parts are readily available for both.
Predictably, people here said go with the 460, while people in the FE forum said go with the 428.
If the 460 doesn't have issues like rust, rotation, etc. you have 32 free cubes over the 428, and parts are much easier and cheaper. It's really not hard to decide.
Besides, the 428 is worth a lot more, and could be sold to finance the 460 build. Maybe somebody in the FE forum will buy it from you.
I'm not 100% sure in the case of a 460 but the other reverse rotation engines I've seen only require a cam change to be standard rotation again. Everything else is the same.
If that 460 was really a boat motor. Even if you have to get another block, I'd use it. The marine motor has 10:1 forged flat top pistons, CJ type rods, and a windage tray. They also did the mis match application of a D0OE SCJ intake on the motor. The heads are just regular low comp. type due to the piston making all the comp. Stock listed at 340 hp. I know I just pulled one out and apart.

Thanks for the info, the 460 is indeed a marine engine. People have them by the dozen around here because they run them in their fishing boats. It sounds like the best choice.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind, but I own and run both so thought I'd throw in my 2cents. As said, both are great engines, the 428 is worth more and is collectible, but the bottem line is that the 460 can be built bigger, cheaper, and badder. Have fun.
