I am looking at a used fiberglass shell for my 03 Ranger and was wondering if anyone had any idea if racks can be added to the f/g shell easily if they are not there....more specifically, how hard is it to add those little metal tabs on four corners of the top of the cap to clamp cargo racks onto? Is this even possible or is there more to it than that?
If you want to haul more than 100lbs you might consider a rack that goes arond the cap like Vanguard. Light duty you can use racks like a SUV has from Sportrack or Perrycraft. These usually mount thru the top of the cap where it is re-inforced with honeycomb or wood. You need to get the install kit designed for fiberglass caps. You can raise the capacity by using a matching cab bar that just clamps on to the door opening from Sportrack.
thanks for the info...I called some body shops yesterday and found that I could get the cap painted to match my truck for between $150 - $175. Sounds like getting racks on this thing are not out of the question....any idea where I could find some of these kits? I would only be looking to load around 110lbs max....(2 Kayaks, occasionally some longer lumber)
You can get them thru your local A.R.E. dealer. They can help if you need installation. Go to www.4are.com and do a dealer search or try Sportrack.com/home and find a dealer there.
thanks for all of the info....looks like I am going to be able to get just what I need and save some money (over buying new cap) in the process....
I will be picking up the cap tomorrow...
