Straight up timing set questions

I installed an Edelbrock timing set with the crank gear in the straight up position a while ago in my 1980 351M. I set the base timing at the stock 10 degrees and it runs good but I get some pinging. The pinging goes away if I back it off to 5 degrees and it still runs good but I didn't think I should have to retard it so far. Is this normal due to the timing set straight up instead of the stock -4? Also the pinging happened only when fully warmed up, didn't happen when cold. The motor is all stock with all emission equipment hooked up and all vaccum hoses routed correctly(as far as I know). Does the adjustable vaccuum advance have anything to do with this? Does the adjustment control how much it advances the timing or does it control how quickly the advance kicks in?

Check your EGR valve. It may not be functioning.

I'll check on the EGR to see if that is causing problems. The main thing I want to know is after installing an aftermarket timing set in the straight up position do I set my timing to stock specs or is it normal to retard it some?
