Question 390 rebuild

my dads friend found me a 390 out of a '68 fairlane. the engine is good but hasnt ran in a while. what would the cost be to rebuild this engine

and how much of the stuff is reusable if in good shape and located in SW missouri

Assuming you can machine your crank, block and heads. you can get a stock rebuild kit for about $500, machine work will run about $500, and misc items(new fuel pump, intake?/carb? will all run about $800. $1800 would be about right for a stock rebuild unless you have some buddies in the machine shop. It cost me $3000 but I went high performance on some items and converted from a 360 to a 390.

It really depends on what condition it is in and what you want to do. The heads are where you can get to spending some real money if they are worn. If you need all new valve guides and valves then it can get rediculous.

I called Terry Walters Engines Yesterday to see about my
Possible 390 machine work?

Hot tank block- $39
Cam bearings - $19
Freeze plugs - $19
Block bored .030- $75
Line bore------$115
Deck block----$52
Grind crank .010-- $75
Recon Rods----$82
Bal. Assy-----$95

About $600 in machining on the lower end!!

Is the line bore and block decking necessary? I thought those weren't commonly needed on an FE.

They aren't usually needed. Your machinist can check these for straightness.

BTW, those are very good prices. I know I spent a lot more.
