adding a turbo

Is this doable for a 87-91 7.3? What is the cost and what kind of turbo would it require? Also, a couple of other questions.

-What kind of fuel mileage do you get? (f-250 4wd stick shift)

-Are they reliable engines? ( how long to first rebuild)

-Is the clutch and manny tranny good?

-What does regular maintenence involve?

Thanks

very doable, there are three main manufacuters for turbos for these motors,BANKS,ATS and the third one escapes me at the moment.fuel milage depends on the time of year and how heavy your right foot is.with the correct maintanice these engines are very reliable,i bought mine with 136,000 on her now she has 171,000 and i would not think twice about hopping in her and driving across country or anywhere else for that matter.first rebuild depends on maintainice but its not unheard of to get 300,000 out of one.clutch and trans are good.regular miantanice involves regular oil and filter changes, coolant additive, and fuel treatment.

The other kit is Hypermax. They are probably the least expensive now, They're way under 2 grand.

I have put on too many ATS's to count, they are by far the best kit out there (that's why Ford put it on the factory turbo trucks), but they know it and charge accordingly.

Is it considered safe to add a turbo to an engine with say 140,000 mi without a rebuild?

Cool Gee gang...

I've got 214,000+ on my '93 7.3 IDI, oil, filters and so on a regular change schedule...3,000 miles since new. Except the air filter, as I do that every 30,000. I hope to make it last to 500,000 before a rebuild...85% interstate driving. Is that possible?

I have a 91 IH 4600 @ work with 17500 hours on it,these trucks have pumps on them and run all day 6 days a week @ an idle between stops. Are fleet department has figured out that 1 hr.= 30 miles which comes to 525,000 miles.
I've only put one injection pump on it,it needs a set of injectors now but that would be the first set.
I've lost count on how many glow plugs I've installed.
This truck has NO blow by.
I've had t444e's go south with less hours.

And........it only average's about 3 oil changes a year!

Which turbo do you feel is the best to install. Not economicly speaking. But best working.

I believe the ATS system was the best that I installed. Did many of them after the first, which was the hardest to install. You will stand there looking at the system and the space to put it into and think, no way, but in she will go. The instructions are fantastic - no hidden problems either. Good luck and you can get help in here.

Damn glad to hear that about ATS was real impressed with there ad ! Trying to figure if it would be wise to put kit on present motor or find core and go thru it then put turbo on .Catching hell because I want to put turbo kit on.Go figure one of my freinds has a chevy one ton with a 5.9 cummings and the other has an 02 poke an stroke with training wheels ,my old tired a$$ed 89 7.3 with 200k plus will run with the ps and flat walk away from the cummings and it has a turbo also.Just want to be able to tow my toy to the race track alittle easier!

My vote is for the ATS. I've installed around 30 of 'em. Only done 4 Hypermaxes, and one Banks.
