Hello all again. I've been having problems since I bought a gauge assembly for my 1980 Ford from Ebay. I hooked it up into my truck, and the tach worked for a little while. Then a few hours later I started my truck and the tach didn't work. Today I've been troubleshooting the tach all day. Sometimes it works sometimes not. I checked all connections, cleaned all connections, replaced the voltage regulator, checked to make sure all wires were getting power. Everything checked out ok but tach still doesn't work. Think my tach is bad?
It don't make sense why the tach would work sometimes and sometimes it wouldn't.
I solved the problem. I took the tach casing apart, and found that the needle casing had separated the circuit board. They should be touching each other through the G wire hookup, so they can both be grounded. If they don't touch, then the tach won't work. What I will have to do is resolder the two connections together. Then it should be good as new! Phew, what a load off my mind. For a while there I thought I might have had to buy another used tach! Saved myself $80.
If any of you come across a tach that doesn't work, that is probably why it doesn't.
yeah my very first tach i had got for my truck outof a v bronco was wierd that way would work then it wouldnt then i didnt hook up one of the connectors and it would work then i shut it off went to go start it up again didnt work i got so fed up with it i threw it on the road which broke it but i kept the face plate incase i eevr got another one i end up putting thr stupid plate back on it for awhile but was determind to fine another one finally found another one in another ford bronco in a diffrent junk yard and put it in that one worked fine and still is owrking good since they ive found one other bronco in the junk yard with one and a truck with one and have gottena nd tested both of them and they both work to there good to have hey nickmobile how much did ford cahrge you for that new tach and circut board for your truck just curious is to what a new one is ?
I'm not sure how much a new tachometer is, but for a remanufactured speedometer it costs $650. I imagine the tach is about the same since it is harder to find.
650 dollars for a rebuild speedometer!!!!!!!!!!! is ford crazy and on drugs or what? good thing i got a had full of those things from the junk yard to 650! dollars that is a rip off and a JOKE!!!!!! there so cheap to hell i had problem with mine flezuatiing from 5 to 15 but i end up making one good one out of 3 of them and now it works good and is acurate since i put in one witht he trip milage on it
denniscarpenter.com offers the speedometer for $250. Still expensive though. I don't see how they could sell them for that much, when you can get one for as low as $20 used.
still those pric3es are outraguoes for a stupid thing like that they must not sell alot of those and yeah i can get those speedo's at the local junk yard for 20 and those tachs for 15 with a return policy if i want and those guages what are they thinking on those! i can get those for 5 at the junk yard unless i put one in my pocket but you ddnt hear that from me and those things are all JUNK even those voltage regualtors those things are the worst napa charge me 30 dolalrs for a new one i said screw that cause the one id di get worked no better then the one i just took out andf went to the junk yard and took them out of vans broncos and trucks for next to nothing and started putting them in untill i found one that gave me accruate readings
Aftermarket instrument voltage regulators aren't made as well as OEM Ford parts as you would find in a junkyard or similar places. I can go to my local picknpull and it costs like $2 or something like that. It's just crazy.
You know what's really hard to find though? A dash assembly with red needles on all the gauges. They came in 1986 fords, especially xlts and lariats. I wish I could get those sometime cause it'd look awesome in my 1980 ford.
yes i did find a 86 bronco XLt with dam near every guage in it still that transprent orange so now my needles do glow at night like they did when new which is nice also got the needle off the tach for that to and the speedo needle iv nevr seen red ones but if you want that just take a red sharpie market and color them i did that with my old guages since they where faded yellow and didnt glow at night anyway i got a yellow sharpie market and colors them and they looked a lot better yeah i found that out that the aftermarket ones where no good and that just get a had full from the junk yard and youll be good thats funny you have a picnpull there to i live in california to but im close to the nevada boarder so i go to reno and carson city mostly reno and they both have "picnpulls" where i go to get all my stuff
I have the same problem with mine and someone said since I took from a 6 cyl and put in v-8 that some ground wire might need to be changed. Mine works sometimes and then it doesn't. Did you have luck in resoldering?

The Fluorecent Red paint on the guage needles will fade to a white color due to sunlight.
You can re-paint them. What works good for me is a model car paint marker such as Testors Fluorescent Red Paint Marker #2575.
You can use an index card, just slip the card between the guage face and the needle and paint it.
Just remember to paint the needles with a fluorecent Red Paint. Regular Red Paint will make your needles turn black in the green light of your instrument illumination at night.
