What I thought was a bad drivers side head light has turned out to be something more. I noticed that the new headlight I installed looked a little dim last night and low beam was burned out when I started out this morning. Within 20 minutes the high beam on the drivers side also burned out. I have seen many vehicles driving around with one weak light but have never had this happen to myself. What is causing this trouble? Historically I start replacing parts and have about a 50-50 chance of fixing the actual broken part so I really want to narrow the list of possible problems before I throw money at the truck. My batteries are strong and the passenger side head light is strong. The truck has a few electrical problems which include dome and cargo lights that will not go off (bulbs currently removed) and no signal lights ( waiting for the lottery before I fork out $160 for new signal light switch.)
sounds like corrded or shorting wires. Take a voltemeter and check the volatge rite at the headlight socket. theres three wires going to each headlight. one is ground one is low beam and the other is high beam. make sure that ya ahve 12 volts on both the low and high beam. with the engine running. almost sounds like to me ya may have ab ad voltage regulator. with the engine running ya should read aroun 13-14 volts on the bat terminals. Yar head light sockets should read about the same as the bat terminals. if ya have excesive volatge it may be time for a new voltage regulator or new altentor cant rember if the regulator can just be changed or not on these trucks. some trucks the regulator is built into the altentor and ya have to change the whole thing. let us no what voltages ya come up with.
Well I checked the voltage and I am getting 13.4 V everywhere on the truck. I will put in a second Lamp and see what happens. It may have been a bad lamp, it has sat on my garage shelf for over twenty years before I needed it.
