I say take a look at what fordpilot mentioned, makes sense, if the sound came from that area.

How did the motor run when you did get it to fire?

My distributor if the timing is off as in 0-2 BTDC would make a grinding noise, again I am not sure how loud your sounds is, but mine if severely out of time, would make such a noise. Should you figure it out you have to post the results, I am very interested in finding out what is causing your problems.

Good luck

guys....I forgot to tell you that my buddy got under the truck (yikes!!) and watched the starter engage, then disengage properly. That is the first thing we thought of, but it's working just fine, every time. But we know for a fact that it disengaged, and the noise still happened.

The motor fires off every single time. If I didn't shut it off it would keep running, but I can't stand the noise for more than a second.

The noise is pretty loud. I might try to record it and post it somewhere.

We are turning the motor until the number 1 piston gets to TDC. And the firing order I'm using starts with the 1-5 for the standard 302, and not the H.O. firing order. After it gets to TDC, we put the distributor down in the hole and get the rotor lined up with the number one piston.

Well, get a few friends, everyone stick their nose in the engine bay, have someone fires the engine for a couple of seconds, and listen for the noise. Otherwise, unless you can find the answer, your gonna have to tear that engine apart and inspect it.

The flexplate isn't hitting/rubbing anything, don't know why or how it would but you never know?

Are you using a efi timing cover electronic fuel pump or are you using a timing cover with the fuel pump opening~ mechanical pump? If mechanical, could your fuel pump arm be rubbing the timing cover? I am trying to think of everything I can, I would say you already have thought all this over, but figured I would throw it out there. Good luck once again

No 1 piston on TDC has got many people..it
has to be on the compression stroke..the
valves will be closed. TDC on exhaust
stroke is timing off 180 degrees. I have done
that error and recall mondo bad noises.
Crank rotates 720 for each 360 camshaft on
4 stroke. Double check me figures as it
is kind of a mind twister got to draw it
out for me.

Keep posting..very interesting prob.

JW: I'm using the timing cover that came off of the functioning (but leaking) motor that I just pulled out of the truck. When I pulled the cover off I looked for any indications of that arm rubbing, but there was nothing. I've pondered the flexplate, but again, no signs.

Fordpilot: I'll recheck the timing.

I'm going to make a recording if I can and convert it to a small mp3.

problem solved

Well guys, after this I doubt I will ever post here again because I will be booed off of the stage. It was an air leak at the carbureator adapter. The back of the carb was sticking over the metal plate by about a 1/4th inch. I cannot believe it.

I have never in my life heard a sound that sounded so mechanical and scrubbing, and it turned out to be a freggin' air leak. After fixing the leak it cranked right up, and after adjusting the timing it's running great.

It sure is sweet having an AOD in a '76 model truck.

I'm sorry I wasted everyone's time, but I've learned a good lesson. Air leaks can do some WEIRD things.

I think JWtaylor hit the nail on the head pretty early on but I kept disagreeing. THANKS!
