I took the old starter solenoid off and put the new one on and I have no power at all... it wont start its like t there is no battery power connected... so I put the new one back on to realize there is still no power and I am screwed I have to waste time and money towing the truck all the way back home.. if you guys have ANY ideas that would be great
What made you pull the old solenoid off?! Need more info... You just pulled in the lot and pulled it off??? (maybe I missed another post...if so, sorry)
I'm assuming that you have checked the battery somehow? You know that it does have juice?
Check for corroded wires, loose wires to the solenoid AND starter!
ok... I went to autozone b/c I am having a starting when warm problem..
and they checked my batt and its bad... but still... it would have some juice to at least illuminate the lights inside outside/stero everything else... but there is like no power to anything
I tried to fix this in autozone.. so its there for the night and hope it wont be towed b/c I have it in 4 low....
the guys said they wont but you never know
is there anything else to check for with the solonoid?
Change the battery. If it was bad then thats probably the problem. Make sure u have good connections to the solonoid and starter, and that all of the connections are tight. Clean your battery cables and posts and then try it. Then change your battery.
Mine left me in a parking lot once (at autozone) believe it or not and would do absolutely nothing when I turned the key to crank. I jumped the solenoid and it fired right up. So I went in and bought a new solenoid and put it on and it still did nothing. With the key in the crank position I smacked the steering column and it cranked right up. Probably doesn't help you too much because it sounds like its more your battery but it might work.
Recommend you put in new large battery with the highest cold cranking amps you can get. Also replace both battery cables if they show signs of age / oxidation. Big Bronco's are notorious for hard starting when hot, especially after towing a camper or boat.
When I first got my '88 Bronco, I developed a problem with the alarm system kill switch ... sometimes acted like a dead battery when I turned key on. Began carrying a small jumper wire under hood. When engine wouldn't start the normal way, I would place the ignition Key in the "on" position ... use jumper wire from positive post to solenoid contact to start truck. Not long after, tracked problem down and corrected it.
is it turning over? if it is and still wont start try replaceing the ignition mod, it should be clamped right on the side of the distibuator, there about 20 bucks.
when my batt went dead last year, I could turn the radio on..the dome came on, etc...but go to crank and the solenoid/starter wouldn't do a darn thing! put my wifes batt in and started right up. Pulled it out and drove to Autozone and put a new batt in and has been fine ever since!
my suggestion:
Battery.
Cobrajrb is correct, if it cranks but doesn't start...I'd replace the TFI module(on the distributor). Mine went out and it cranked for days until that got replaced...then fired up!

if you know that the battery is bad why would you not replace it and then proceed from there. speaking from experiance, batteries do very strange things, it is not uncommon for a battery to have a dead short when it goes bad. i have also heard (not sure if true) but if you have a really old battery and then shake the battery or jump a curb etc. it can be enough shock to make some plates inside the battery to create a dead short inside.
play it smart, you know you need a battery start with that.
if you have no power to anything you might not even have acessory power. Replace the battery and check all fusible links by the solinoid and by the driver side firewall. Almost sounds like a ignition switch if your not getting power to anything. $9.49 at autozone. I had the same problem, Changed the battery, starter, ignition switch and still nothing. I ran new power wires to the ignition switch and still nothing but had radio again. Fuel pump had no power. Still tracing wires to find exact problem, but she's running again. Don't get discouraged keep trying.

thanks for all the tips... I had to get it towed anyways... now its sitting on my street in front of my house... lol... oh well it looks pretty when I look out the window..
how do I check the fusable links? what exactly am I looking for?
I could be wrong but you know the little wire that goes on the front side of the solenoid, facing the motor. Well if you forgot to hook that up wouldn't that leave you powerless. Like I said I am probably wrong, but just trying to help.
