Question Hardstarting?

Hello all. This is my second time here. I am posting this message to get some advice on a possible hardstarting condition on a 1992 Ford F150 supercab truck. Here goes, the first thing in the morning when I turn the key to the start position... the truck cranks and kicks over and dies out. Other times, I start the truck up and seems like it wants to die out so I give it some gas before it dies out. Before it neverused to do this. What could cause it to act this way?

P.S. The truck has 136K+ miles on it. It has been three years since I changed the fuel filter on it or cleaned the fuel injectors. Other problems are oil consumption, electrical and transmission.

Engines like fuel, engines like air. I think you answered your own question my friend!

Start with the fuel filter.
Check the air filter.
Check the timing.
Check the plugs.
Check the plug wires.
Check the dizzy cap.

etc etc.

Ok. Ill do that. By the way, Is there a special tool I need to replace the fuel filter? What do I do to prevent the fuel from spilling out the the fuel lines?

You can pick-up the set of tools needed at any auto parts store. I purchased the plastic ones years ago and they haved served me well. (8-10 dollars for the set)

As far as the fuel in the lines goes, I hate to say it, but there is not a good (or easy) way. I remove the fuse (you can trip the inertia switch also) from the fuel pump circuit and start the truck. This drops the pressure in the fuel lines. When the truck dies, I attempt to start it one more time just for good measure. I then slide under the truck with rags and safety glasses in hand knowing that me and the driveway will soon have the wonderful smell of Gasoline.

For you hard start problem, try a simple experiment. When you go out to start you truck again, turn the key on, but do not start it. Listen for the fuel pump to run. If it does, the circuit is working properly. Turn the switch off then back to the run position, do this a couple of times. Start your truck after the third or fourth time. If your truck starts without the same symptoms this would lead me to believe that you have a fuel system problem.

You didn't say if your truck has dual tanks? If so, the fuel could be draining back into the tank(s) causing the starting problem mentioned.

Mine had similar problems after sitting for a while, wound up being a bad check valve in the rear fuel tank.

Hope this helps...
