throttle linkage

Today I was pulling away from the company for lunch when my gas pedal went to the floor. The linkage had thrown a clip and came apart and now it's tied together with a wire tie from a loaf of bread (for now). What do you recommend for linkage? I've looked at cables but don't know a thing about them.

Lokar and genie shifter make some nice cables. A coat hanger will get you by for now.

LMAF!
How would I begin to put a cable on? I can't see how it would work with my original configuration.

I had to make a holder out of aluminum sheeting and bolt that to my maniifold. Then it will go to the carb. You will figure it out when you get the cable. They even come with kickdown cables incorporated into the design.

Wallace, You might want to think about converting to a mid 70s series pedal that uses a rod to the carb. You will have to cut a hole in the fire wall to get the assembly rod through.

I have aquired the setup and hope to convert it this spring. What a PITA to have it come off on a dark night.

Take ALL junk off that is bolted to the intake. Take a piece of coat hanger or welding rod and make yourself a nice straight rod to hook the two together. Bend a hoop on the end and hook it thru the holes.

The orginal linkage hooked on the bottom of the linkage arm of carb, you need to hook it to the top side. There are holes there to use.

What I do is set the pedal on the floor(so you know max travel), then open carb to WOT and measure distance between the two holes and make linkage that length. Now you will have WOT when pedal is on floor.

You will have to retro-fit a spring to make it return properly. That is just a make-it-yourself arrangement.

I have also used threaded rod and spherical ball ends from the local hardware store to make a more "professional" looking linkage.
If someone wants a picture, I'll post what I have done.

I'd like a picture. I can imagine what you've described but I'd like to see what it looks like to see if I want to go that route.

Also can you give me a quick class on what to do to take the play out of the pedal if I run straight from the pedal rod to the carb.

I'll try to get something tonight. At work now.

Not sure what you mean by "play". I know the original linkage had alot of slop to it, but with a straight rod there will be none.

EDIT: Ok, I got the "drawing" added to my white '67 truck gallery. Take a look and see if it makes sense.

Kickdown

So Larry, I was wondering, what do you use for your kickdown? Or do you leave that off of yours?

The only way to eliminate slop would be get threaded rod and a couple ends. That would make it sturdy as possible. Like mentioned I have a coat hanger on my '67 right now(too cold out to work too hard on it right now) and it works fine. I know the factory linkage is about as sloppy as it gets, with all that gizmo linkage rotating around back and forth. That is why I take it off of mine.

As for kickdown....I have a stick shift. I removed the automatic last summer. I HATE automatics

If you keep the factory carb, the the kickdown will still work. If you have a aftermarket carb that has the FORD kickdown lever, it will still all work the same. The kickdown is a separate lever and not connected to throttle linkage(directly). If you have an aftermarket carb without a kickdown, then your S-O-L no matter what.

I'm running a 3 on the tree. I'm going with the threaded rod. I hate stuff that wiggles when it's not supposed to.

Well I've reconsidered and thinking of going with the throttle cable but can't find one around here anywhere. Does anyone know anything about the Lokar 24" stainless "u cut to fit" cable?

That cable sounds too expensive for the worth and trouble to install.

I'd go to Lowe's and pickup the rod and rod ends and do it that way....but that's my opinion.

If you want the Lokar stuff check Summitracing.com and see what they say OR jegs.

As a second thought, maybe hit a junkyard and pickup a pedal assy from a Mustang and it will have pedal and cable assy all in one. Make a bracket at carb to hold it and your done. I had to do this with my '64 with the blower. There was no solid linkage that was going to reach the carbs. This was a basic bolt in with just a couple drilled holes.
