Thanks for the advice. I've done several rebuilds, they were just all on chebbies. I learned from the 350 4bbl and 350 auto trans. in school. I just finished the heads, and found 3 stuck valves in the process. You wouldn't believe the amount of crud I dug out. I will throw those pics in my profile, and keep updating as I go. I do have one question: I'm trying to decide if I should have the heads shaved while they're out. It's a 351m with a stock setup.
Use a 400 crank, badger flattop pistons, and take 0.010 off the head to make it 9:1 CR. Do some porting work add headers and a cam that makes power where you want it.
sounds like a pretty good idea. I may ending up rebuilding it as is until I can afford to the more extensive mods. I found out that shaving the heads is inexpensive, but the 400 kit runs about five to six hundred for the basics.
it's not really any additional expense if your crank needs attention. the crank and pistons are a standard replacement item by definition in a rebuild, an overhaul is a different story. shop around and the cost might come down a bit too.
sounds like i need to pay more attention to that 400 in the junkyard. I wasn't aware that it would be salvageable. Although there is no guarantee that the crank is still in one piece, something is holding in in place, I can't turn the motor to remove the flywheel bolts to get the motor out.
drop the oil pan and have a look. I'm learning a lot about what a little water will do to the inside of an engine. I found an OE rebuild kit at the local auto store for about 200, so I'm sticking with it for the moment. They are also doing the machine work for about another 150. (valve job, shave the heads, crank turned, bearings pressed, bores refinished.)
