The rear brakes on my '03 Ranger are locking up. The dealer told me it was a glazing problem and many people are complaining. Appently Ford is selling a new style of brake lining that is supposed to cure the problem. My warranty will not cover this.
Has anyone experienced this?
I would check and make sure that nothin is siezed up first, then make sure you have enough brake fluid, and that everything is in tip top shape. Then consider replacing the linings.
Do they only lock up on a really damp day or do they lock all the time? If they do it when it is damp, nothing has changed in at least 10yrs. My 92 did the same thing my 03 does.
they lock up no matter what temp., weather, or road surface. The dealer just had it yesterday and told me to replace the lining at my cost of around $125.....yea right! I'll change them myself if it comes to that.
Yup, stupid drum brakes. I don't know why Ford keeps using stuff that's been around longer than my grandparents. For $25,000, you'd think they'd at least give you some disc brakes. Mine lock up in the rear, esp. when it's really humid outside. I'm not sure what you can really do about it except convert them to discs. www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com.
My 02 rear brakes have locked up on me only twice. Both times when I start out on a wet morning. And both times only when I was backing out of my parking spot.
The damp thing also effects F 150s.
As for locking up all the time, no. Just the two times.
I don't think my rears have ever locked up. I'd actually like to get rid of my ABS so that they would lock up when non-ABS brakes would. I'd rather lose a bit of control and be able to stop instead of having perfect control of the vehicle as you roll into the car in front of you because your ABS was working.
On a related note, my e-brake will "freeze" on when its get below freezing temps. overnite. I assume its a moisture problem, What I don;t understand is if the lining is glazed, Why would that make them lock up? I think I going to sand them and see if that helps. I agree about the disc brake thing, The drums are only on there cuz there cheaper. Some, if not all, 03 F-150's are rear disc.
WXboy,
I notice in ur pic that you said u FX4 package was supposed to have step bars, Is that just the FX4 package? I have the Level II package and I didn;t get step bars either. Should I have? I bought my truck 11/02, do you think its to late to get them if i should have them?

Maticuno,
I'm with you. What you said, plus I LIKE it if my tires bawl when some jerk does something really stupid which causes me to have to apply my brakes excessively. Screeching tires and a good loud horn tend to at least get their attention momentarily.
Heh, I had that happen to me onetime, I was driving infront of my school when a bus pulled out infront of me. I locked up the brakes, and there was a cloud of smoke from the wheels sliding. I was amazed how many people asked me what happened the next day.
You guys that don;t like ABS obviously never driven in the North during winter. The newer ABS systems are the best thing since sliced bread on icy/snow covered roads.
I had problems with my rear brakes as well. I have a 95 ranger and the dealer replaced the rear shoes twice while under warranty because they "swelled" up in wet or humid weather. The dealer claimed that Ford was hard at work on the problem... blah blah blah..., but it appears that people still have that problem 9 years later, so my guess is that they really havn't been working too hard on it.
In the intrests of safety, what I did was hammer the brakes a few times on my quiet street that has no traffic, the brakes seem to work better as they get warmed up, so by the time I reached a busy road I was confident that I could at least stop...
Jason, the FX4 package comes with step bars. Mine were accidentally forgotten at the factory. I do not know if FX4 Level II gives you step bars or not. Check your window sticker.
