I was standing in front of my truck yesterday while it was sitting at idle. I noticed what sounded like the AC compressor "clicking in" about every 5 seconds or so. The defrost was not on, nor was the AC. I am more used to gas vehicles and have heard this noise before from them when the AC or defrost is on. Is there some other compressor (or other hardware) that runs in the diesel that would sound like that? I looked real hard under the hood to make sure I had not run over a Toyota pickup or other baby truck and maybe it was stuck under there, did not see anything .
Thanks powerstroker, did not know it would come on in the other positions. Once again, learned something. Hard to believe I can still learn since turning 43!
If it is your A/C compressor cycling at such a rapid rate, you could be low on freon or have a bad compressor cycling switch. If the compressor runs in all positions, including "off", you could have a short in your control switch. There could also be a compressor relay that is sticking and not letting it cut off.
Dont' know about the psd but my ranger does the exact same thing. Was told by a dealer several years ago that it was automatic to keep the coolant circulating in the pipes. hense your pipes sweating evan though you didn't use the A/C.
