I have a 99.5 Powerstroke and I changed my oil yesterday. My manual says add 14 quarts of oil when changing your oil and filter. I've changed my oil several times and it has never read full on the mark. I see in other post that many of you are using 15 quarts of oil during a change. Ford tells me that the truck calls for 14 and the dipstick was stamped incorrectly. They also told me this is a common problem on Fords, but it was never recalled. Those of you using 15 quarts of oil is this what your manual tells you or are you just triing to get it to show full on the dipstick? Thanks in advance for your help.
If I remember correctly, supposedly the early 99's had a 14qt pan while the 99.5's got the 15qt pan. Your manual may not have been updated. Regardless, 1/2qt shouldn't hurt anything.
.............I started just putting all 16 quarts in and then I'm a quart over and have never had any problem . I got tired of having one quart of oil left over as I always have to add a half of a quart before I change again every 5k miles.....s.kuteman
Ok so now that we have resolved that let me throw this at you. I have the triple mount guage pod on my pillar, obviously with a manual tranny I don't need to have a temp guage on it. Before I knew this I had purchased my guages so with the advice of TS products, The manufacturer of my Guages, I put the extra temp guage in my oil pan to watch its temperature. Long story short I regret the day I decided to do this, my oil temp constatnly runs in the 220 degree plus range and has been in the red level many, many times. Many have told me not to worry about it but it just doesn't seem normal to me. Do you think that running 14 quarts instead of 15 would make that big of a difference in the oil temperature? Thanks for all the replys.
I'm with Quadzilla here. You are no where near the max temp. Remember that your engine oil is actually COOLED by your engine's coolant in the oil cooler. And that water is not much below 200 at operating temp.
I doubt that 1/2 quart is affecting your oil temp at all. If I were you, I'd fill it to the level indicated on the dip stick and forget about it.
Since that gauge is not calibrated properly for your engine oil, why not hook it up to your manual transmission oil. The manual transmission in your truck has its own oil cooler and it might be interesting to observe how it behaves when pulling.
