Now that the sheer thrill of owning a new truck is settling down I have noticed the vibration that has become quite the topic around here.
What I would like to know is what rear ends are you guys running ? That might narrow down my pathway.
I'll start;
screw, 4x4, limited slip 373 rear end. Mostly at speeds of 42-45 mph.
Screw 4X4, LS 3.73. Vibration most noticable from 52-58 mph (1,200 to 1,400 rpm in OD). Also vibrates in other gears at same rpm, but less noticable. Vibration is not severe, but I can tell when I'm going 52-58 w/out looking a speedo.
Hard to tell if I have vibration with these crappy Michigan roads but I don't think I have any noticeable vibration. It rides like a truck and I like it. I have a Super Cab Lariat 4X4 3.73 limited slip built in Norfolk, VA. Only 400 miles on it and still have the new truck thrill going on!
Mine is just a vibration in the floorboard's,or under I should say,also sent email to ford through this thread,they called me to say that the engineers were working on this issue,BUT there is no tsb out yet,NO ***T . Mine is a 3.73 limited slip.
If they aknowlege that there is a problem, that's a good start. I realize there is not a immediate solution. That's better than what I have read. Another guy said his dealership said they were done trying. In other words dont bring it back, live with it.
5.4 Lariat 4x2 3.73 LS screw. My vibe is between 45 and 60 mph under load. It is much worse when towing my 5000lb camper. This along with my rough idle is driving me nuts. The worst part is that the dealer says it cant verify the problem!!
I have owned many 4x4's and they just ain't what you think. About 10 years ago I ordered a truck that was 4x4 with a ls dif...WOW what a huge difference. We had a large farm and getting stuck is real easy with a 4x4 especially in the mud...Put a ls in it and it is like a tank...Well almost! :O) I will never buy a 4x4 without it unless you are talking an Audi quatro!!! LOL
2004 S-Crew 3.51 LS 4X2. 7,000 Mi. Ocassional vibration, usually when starting out and turning. Only rarely at road speed. Hasn't been a real problem, yet. However, the hard starting and idle vibration are starting to get to me. Have to give the Blue Oval folks credit though, this is the 1st new truck I've ever owned that hasn't had to go back to the dealer a dozen times in the 1st 5,000 miles. Not a single rattle or paint or interior problem. "I Love My Truck"
I had the low end shudder problem when turning and took it to the dealer. Apparently there is a known issue with the LS rear, so they first replaced the fluid which helps. I've got the 04 Super Crew 4x4 w/3:73 LS from Kansas. My larger issue is the rear vibration or wobble at about 55-62 mph. I'm suspecting a rear end problem or driveline problem since reading about those with this same issue who've had these replaced or repaired. From all I've been reading, this clearly appears to be an engineering issue and since there is so much I do like about the truck, I'm trying to remain positive so we can all get to the bottom of this with reslults. Ultimately I want this fixed and will share what I've learned with others. Recently I upgraded the tires thinking that would help. Went with the TOYO AT and this seemed worse since the tire is heavy duty, so I went back down to a Toyo Proxes ST and the problem is still there. I'm going to take it for a long test drive on a newly paved higway today to confirm but clearly using the stock BFG tire, and trying two other sets with the assistance of the tire shop balancing and rebalancing, the problem IS NOT tires. I'm going to take it to the shop again to start the process in finding the problem and applying the fixes Ford is attempting with others. I'm not looking for perfection, but it needs to be better. A word of advice. Be nice to everyone assiting. Your tire shop, dealership, and service departments. I've had awesome support and clearly did my homework before purchasing just for that reason. Hope this helps others and look forward to posting a fix soon!
Wow, great information. I am scheduled for service this Tuesday for a shutter eminating from the rear at take off. I also have noticed vibration at 55mph. I was afraid that the dealer would not find the problem because it seems intermittent. Based on these comments it would appear they have a known problem (with no fix yet). I have a 04 FX4 SCREW w/3.73 rear and was concearned what would happen when I tow my 7000lb trailer cross country.
I towed my 6000 lb. trailer last weekend and the problem was not as bad. The problem is most noticable when the truck is empty with no weight. I don't think this is a mechanical issue or anything dangerous, just extremely anoying. You should be fine pulling the trailer. In fact, my best ride is pulling my trailer. I have to say I was extrememly impressed with the increase in power from my previous 02 S-Crew. Clearly this truck is great on performance. I just believe the stiffer frame and moving the shocks to the outside as well as a drivetrain problem is the issue. I'm thinking that the shocks mounted on the outside is not much of a benifit at all if the overall ride performace suffers. That extra give in the previous model might have been better. It is a plus to have the new front end as it turns much sharper than before and is another benefit when towing.
