I very rarely spend time on the highway/interestate...but I went to canada a few months ago and we got into a small snow storm and saw trucks just traveling with their hazards on...so we figured why...but hte other day I saw one at night w/ them on and then shut them off after i passed him....what does that mean....
It means....they are telling you to go around them as presently they are a hazard, because they can't or won't drive the speed limit.
It is a caring suggestion
A trucker also turns on his hazards for 3 clicks after he passes another truck and just before the front truck changes lane in front of the other the rear truck flashes his brights.
I have gotten into this habit of turnin on my hazards right after a pass or letting them know it is clear when they pass me (not often let me tell ya)
If they are not on the CB, after that they normally are wondering What The .... just happened. Then we engage in a nice long conversation about absolutely nothing for a few hundred miles. :P

Mil1ion is correct. When I drive our work trucks I do the same thing. It's just a courteous thing.
I have found that mostly trucke with flatbeds use their back-up or spot lights to signal the person thanks for letting them know it is safe to come back in the lane.
It is the buses,Trucks with a Reefer, tanker or just an ordinary box trailer that will flash his hazard or Running lights on the toggle.
When Michelle's daughter was about 13 we were on the hwy and I flashed my highbeams to let the trucker know it was safe to come back, she asked why I keep doing that and I explained to her what was going one.
Well for the next hour she was saying,
"Okay Dennis,it's safe,flash the headlights.
they also use them when they get behind a slow moving vehicle to let people behind them know they are going under the speed limit. ive even started doing that when i get behind someone going slower than the limit.

i have found that while driving in a snow storm at night, you sometimes can see better with just you park/hazard lights on. when you have the headlights on they can reflect so much light off of the falling snow that it makes it hard to see.the first time i tried it i was very suprised how much better i could see.

Mil1ion is absolutely correct. Like going up a hill we lose allot of speed so flip them on to warn the traffic behind we are slower than you so come on around
I usualy flash my light to let a truck know their clear. We use the hazard lights on the farm while escorting a tractor or while pulling an impliment on the street with a truck because I pull implements with a truck a 20 max (I dont care who I make mad its a safty issue) to leet people know that you are slow moving because I would rather have a car rear end a pick up than hit the tractor because there are too many idiots out there not paying attention or that realize that even thought that the speed limit is 35 a tractor tops out at 20 (our ford 4000 SU and our ford 4600 high wheeler) (also some machenery is wider than the road even though we try to keep it over people still nearly hit wide machenery. Also here is a little info if you are ever escorting a tractor, truck etc it is your fault if you flag some one around to pass and they get in a wreck. Also if you see a farmer going down the road be cortious and turn or you 4 ways and help him out. We appricate it
its great to see the concept of courtesy but please understand.... i cant stand people flashing their highbeams in my mirror, neither can any other trucker. the angle our mirror is at our height makes it blinding. its also confusing becuase some people have a ancient habit of flashing high beams at us from behind to say they're about to pass us. no idea why. to signal a trucker, or anyone else clear u blink ur headlights OFF for a second then back on, a time or two. thats how we do to each other. its also why those headlights that wont go off while ur driving are a bad idea. anyway thats the method. to say thanks, most trucks have a "interupt" switch that blinks the tail lights without turning their headlights off. trucks without that use flashers sometimes to say thanks, or in the daytime cuz their brighter. but please, no highbeams!! especially at night
