My 95 1 ton dually rearend keeps on messing up the ABS sensor which controls the speedo and the ABS. The mechanic tells me that the sensor is getting clogged up with metal. So just replacing the sensors would be hopeless because they are going get clogged up again. So I want to replace the ring and pinion and all the bearings. But I don’t know what rearend I have and I also don’t know what gears I have. This is the VIN of the truck. 1FDKF37F4SNB07945 and the sticker on the door jam has an axle code of F5. The dealer I called gave me an estimate of $1,250.00 to do a complete rebuild of the rearend which includes the gears and all bearings and labor. I think I can get it done much cheaper, so any help would be great.
The damage is obvious becuase I saw one of the teeth broken on the ring gear when I was replacing the rearend cover because it was leaking. Also the truck has around 190K miles.
Well that's too bad. I've never had the rearend rebuilt on a 1-ton dually, so I can't help much. The 1/2 and 3/4 ton rebuilds I've had done didn't cost near what you've been quoted, but I've not gone to the dealer either. Wish I could help more . . .
I helped rebuild the rear end on my friend's '97 F350 Cab & Chassis. The parts for the complete rebuild ran about $800, but that included new axle gears and spider gear kit. Don't know how much it would be for just the ring & pinion and install kit. This was an open carrier differential, not a limited slip. Could have used a pinion depth gauge, but worked out OK with trial and error shimming.
Not being a smart elic, but was your diff cover leaking in a spot where it shouldn't have? Playing with mudders and welded diffs, I've seen more than my share of diff parts poke holes in the cover. More than likely when the gear broke it tried to shove the broken pieces throught the cover. Did your back tires leave the ground at some time while you were on the throttle? Just curious. Anyway, you can buy ring and pinions for pretty cheap. But if the bearings and spiders are shot, just bite the bullet and let the shop do it.
Nothing was trying to go through the cover. I didn't even find a big chunk of metal when I replaced the cover. So it may of had being broken before I even got the truck. The cover was leaking from the bottom where it meets up with the differential.
