hey guys i have a 94 f350 crew cab and when i bought the truck the front tank gas gauge didn't work but the fuel pump would come on and work. And the rear tank works fine...well this past weekend while driving 400 miles with the truck after being on the highway for about an hour and a half the front gas gauge all of a sudden starts working. And it continues to work untill i shut if off for the night. I get back in the truck in the morning and its not working again. So i fill the front tank back up and drive for another hour or so and it starts working again. But it seems that after it cools down it stops working? Because after i switched to the back tank i would check it every once in a while to see if the front was still reading, and for awhile it was but after an hour or so it stopped reading again. What do you guys think it is??? Corrosion on the connectors? bad tank switch? any ideas would be helpful i really don't want to have to drop the tank if i don't have to!! thanks
Most likely the sending unit. My front tank gauge doesn't work, but every once in a while it will come up and go down. I really havn't bothered to replace it since my truck's mileage is pretty consistant and my rear gauge works.
does anyone know if i can buy the sending unit from ford??? i went to the parts dept. and they found something for $40 that says its the sending unit. Has anyone done this before? thanks

My back tank died a while back, well, just the pump, but since I had it completely apart I replaced everything, sender, assembly, and pump. Works fine.
Now the front sender is dying, and I'm about to do the same thing. Replace the sensor, the pump and the whole assembly.
Even though this is more expensive, I know the second I replace the sender and go for a long drive, the pump is going to go
Definately sounds like the sending unit. I had a similiar problem on my Caravan. It would intermittantly quit working for a few seconds then come back on. Replaced the sending unit and problem solved. With my Ford truck, the sending unit for one tank quit completely, although the pump worked. Local garage dropped the tank and put in the new unit and guage now works fine.
That price sounds about right for the sending unit. I was told by the Ford dealership that with some trucks the sending unit is coupled with the pump, so you cannot replace just the sending unit. Since mine was seperate, I chose just to replace the sending unit, although I did the fuel filter at the same time. Run that tank empty before you do the repair to make it easier to handle the tank. Also, check for rust under the straps. I just patched my one tank due to it rusting through under the strap. I think you can only get the sending unit through Ford, although I didn't do a lot of research before purchasing mine.
well since i'm gutting my fuel pump modules when i go over to diesel then i don't want to have to buy a $130 fuel pump module to just take it apart and use the sending unit. How can you tell if your sending unit is serperate from the module? Other than droping the tank of course! thanks for all the input guys!
