f250 coilpack

hi all
coming home from the races in vegas, the number 3 cylinder coilpack literally blew out of it's hole. the mounting tab was broken off and the coil pack was laying on the intake.
what gives? and can i just buy a new pack and re-install it? or is there something much more going on?
thanks
jim

the plug is still there right???

if its just a broke mounting tab, go to schucks and get you a new pack for around 40 bucks or so. i'm not sure if the new boot comes with the pack or not. you could just re-use your old one if its not too crusty i guess.

hi
thanks - this happend late yesterday so i really havent done a full investigation. the boot is toast Ripped and split up the side) and it sounded like i had a massive exhaust leak when i nursed it home (fortunately i was only 2-3 miles from home). i am assuming the plug is there - i wouldn't think one could back out - or could it? is common for the tab to break

That sound is not a exhaust leak. It is the sound of a missing sparkplug. Same thing happened on the Wife's Thunderbird. Blew the plug out and took the threads with it. We were able to prove that the Ford mechanic that just changed the plugs over torqued them and was able to get the dealer to pay for the new cylinder head! I found out later that the threads in the aluminum heads are very weak and need to be torqued very carefully.

hi
its a 99 with 58K on it.
i just called my dealer and at this point time - ford has a "too bad" attitude and about 3200 for fix but they are going to see what they can do to help because the mileage is low. funny thing tho - ford does not recommend inserting the thread in the head and doesnt seem to want to step up to the plate for a crappy design

I think its an early head design problem, but I've also heard that the number of threads on the spark plug itself may be the cause too.

I'd say go with the insert, quite a few have used them with good results, your Ford dealer just sees your damage as a nice chunk of change if they fix it.

If you are going to replace the heads, maybe check into some aftermarket high flow heads. Maybe check with Edelbrock or the Ford SVT catalog. You could probably save a lot of money going to a local performance shop and having the heads swapped. Just a idea.
