I recently bought a 96 Explorer XLT which has the Goodyear Wrangler RT/s tire on it from the recall. I had my newly acquired vehicle in to my local Ford dealer for an inspection. I am know going through the "get to know you" stage with my new vehicle. The dealer said I needed to get two new tires due to a broken belt and a flat spot on one of the tires. My question to the experts is, what tire would you guys recommend. A tire shop said there is a new Firestone Destination LE which is a great tire and @ $75 a tire. I only need to replace two right now but will eventually do all four. Or should I just put on a couple of more Gooodyear RT/s's. I have looked at TireRack.com - I am not sure if that helps or just gives me too many choices. A little insight would be great. Thanks
I have had the Firestone Destination LEs on my 92 Explorer Sport for about 3000 miles now. They seem to be a fine all around touring tire, at a reasonable price. Do a web search on the tire name, and you may find some reviews.
I run BFG All Terrain TA's on my 99... love them. Have yet to run a better tire.... but that is only my opinion.
I have heard good things about the Michelin LTX's, so I don't think you could go wrong with those either.
Personally I would stay away from Goodyear. From what I have read and heard, they give ok traction in most conditions, but once they hit about 20,000, they are basically worthless.
Is it 2WD, 4WD or AWD? If 4WD, I'd be careful only replacing two tires. I did that on my BII once, and whenever I'd put it in 4WD, the drivetrain would bind up because of differences between the front and rear tires. They were all the same "size", but manufacturing differences, style differences or whatever, they weren't exactly the same size.
This is a 4x4 4 door vehicle. I really do not or am not planning on going off road. I will pull a small utility trailer once in awhile though. The most adverse road conditions will be rain, snow and ice primarily.
Bridgestone Dueler AT or the AT Revo. Best AT tire out on the market right now (IMO). I have never heard a complaint about either. I run 32" Dueler ATs on my '99 and they are the best AT tire I have ever run(way better than my BFG ATs). Great in all conditions and even good in light mud.
I just bought a 98 Explorer this weekend. The GoodYear Wranglers on it are worthless.
I am going to put BFG Long Trails on it this week. I had those on my 95 F-150 and at 40K miles (truck had 166K), they were in excellent condition. Smooth ride. I highly recommend them. $80/ea at Sams Club.
I posted to a similar subject a couple of weeks ago. I put Michelin LTX MS on my explorer about 95,000 miles ago! They still have about 3/16" of tread left (though wet traction has declined in the past year). These tires have been nothing short of fantastic on my 93 4X4. I have driven in all weather conditions, even through over 1ft of snow and these tires never let me down. In the fall I was towing a trailer with about 2000 pounds of concrete blocks. A car pulled out in front of me and I had to slam the brakes very hard. The ABS took over and the tires performed flawlessly. I only rotated them one time over the 95K miles and they have extremely even wear.
I recently bought tires at the tirerack.com for my wife's car. What a pleasant experience! Arrived the next day after I placed the order! Costco installed them for only $10 per tire, complete.
I agree with Rob_ I have Michelin LTX MS on my 2000 and it has 45000 miles on it and i cant even tell that they are used. And all of my traction is still there!! And they are ever so quiet!
