I have an '04 Screw FX4, I don't know about the short bed being a problem but the towing it self may be. I have a two snowmobile trailer that weighs about 2,000 lbs. loaded. I get about 8 mpg. @ 70 mph. not in over drive. I'm not impressed with the power so far. But who knows, the truck has been in the shop for over a week now with some computer problems that they can't figure out. Maybe it had a problem the whole time that was causing a lack of power & I just did'nt know it. I guess we'll see, (soon I hope).
that sucks!! i sure hope you have a problem because 2000 lbs is nothing.. Good luck and keep me posted.. I sold my travel trailer and will deliver it to the new owners on wednesday. I will let you guys know how it pulls.
Looks like Ford is playing games. Just got the truck back & dealer cleared the computer & says now ther is no problem. The service manager drove the truck with me in it & it had more warning lights than a Xmass tree the day I brought it in! The paper work says " could noy duplicate customer complaint". I called the dealer & said I wanted the paper work to reflect the truth, said the work order was "closed out" not much we can do now. Up until now the dealer has great, I have a call in to the GM to see if we strighten out the paper work, just in case I need the truth to come out at a lemon law hearing.
I towed my 1800lb trailer yesterday. It seems a bit "jerky" off the freeway. Not sure why, but it did'nt impress me. On the other hand when I hit the freeway it was powerfull & smooth. When I merged on I put my foot down a little and found myself cruising at 80mph sooner than I expected. The same trailer did'nt kerk the explorer around, but did a weak job of the hills.
Not sure about a fifth wheel but have had no problem pulling a trailer. Have pulled my 4000lb travel trailer, gets up to speed quick and can maintain speed without any problems. Also have pulled my snowmobiles many times about 2000lbs and can run at 75-80 with no problem and get around 14mpg. I love this truck. Traded in a 2002 supercrew for this one. It's much smoother.

I, too, am looking to buy a light weight (6500#) fiver...visited RV dealer and he is concerned about hitch install since bed is an extra 2" deep...a real tight fit with the kingpin on this particular trailer...anybody else heard of this, and what is the solution...I'm a newby at the towing bit...thanks, RBB
I towed my 3900 lb camper to its new oner last night instead of tonight.. I have to say that it was the best tow I have ever had.. I didnt even hook up the bars on the wd hitch, no sway bar either.. Just pulled like a dream. I think that there could be more low end torue but if you need it its there between 3k-4k rpm.
Still no real answers on the fifth wheel question.. I will call a dealer today and see if I can talk to someone who has a clue. I'll keep you posted.
Talked to the rv dealer yesterday.. Suggested that some may fit and some may not, depending on the maker of the 5th wheel. He suggested we look at a few and see which ones will hook up.I cant buy a 5th wheeler based on if it works with my truck, I think I will stick with a tow behind.
