Gauges- Are they really needed if...

I have the AIS, get a 4" exhaust, no chip, and no heavy towing?
Exhaust will lower temps. anyway and I don't put my foot in it unless it is an evasive action. Thoughts appreciated.

I am not a mechanic but here is my two cents. If you don't alter the original factory tune (tuner or chip) I don't see a need for the pyro gaugee. I would think a boost and transmission gauge would be helpful though. You might catch an issue before catostrophic failure......I bet a knowledgeable type will chime in shortly.

Some stock programs run hotter than others, but no, you do not need gauges.

You will have to take a -30 deduction in cool points for not having them though.

I'd suggest at least a tranny temp gauge - that stocker really doesn't tell you diddly. And personally I'd put a pyrometer on - but that's just me. I'm gonna put gauges on my Dad's new truck for him - he drove mine and liked them. I doubt he'll ever chip it or anything - they are usefull - but not absolutely necessary. But ya can't rule out the cool points.

Totally agree on the cool points!

There is no doubt the gauges are COOL! I am just trying to control my mod appetite and I am trying hard to "pace" myself. Its really tough. The intake and exhaust complement each other, so getting both in a short period of time makes sense. For my situation, gauges are just gravy.

I hope to get a boat in a year or two, and gauges will make sense then. Thanks for the replies!

All that being said, I still find myself checking out gauges and pods! "Mod Disease" I guess, huh?

gauges

Bluesman,

Hey I understand about being cost effective; however, let me offer my two cents. (esp. if you are going to purchase a boat or any other trailer!!!!) Spend the money get the gauges. It is a small price to pay now to avoid any failures. Do it right the first time to save yourself money and get all three pyrometer, boost and tranny temp. Also my suggestion is get an aluminum tranny pan holds four more qts fliud and is finned to cool the fluid faster. I pull a 33ft toyhauler and my tranny never gets above 170 here in phx AZ. That heat will kill your tranny faster then anything, that little gauge that comes stock with your truck is not very accurate and will not give you a number value. Oil products break down at 240 the seperate at 220, 200.00 dollars for gauges and pods is a lot cheaper then a new tranny!!!! Even without a chip your egt's can get hot enough to melt your turbo yet another easy way to avoid melt down, GAUGES. If you run your egt's over 1250 degrees for too long = turbo melt. If you tow even a small motorcycle trailer through the mountains how you gonna know your temps? I am out on the guessing/gambling with my expensive truck that I purchased for power and longevity!!! The boost gauge yeah that is a bonus, but lets say what if you do decid to get a chip? Now you already have the boost gauge. Good thing you did it right the first time. Besides it will also help prevent turbo melt by monitoring it too!! I hope this helps, besides you really do want the cool pts back.

I don't know about the stock program. About 2 weeks ago I was pulling about 10k up a mountain pass and with the pyro I kept it at or under 1300f. It would keep going if I let it.

And mine has an intake kit and 4 inch from the turbo back.

I think they are worth it. Everyone has this "it can't hurt itself idea" which isn't always true.

Can't argue w/ those points

What you guys are saying makes perfect sense. Basically, ANY towing and I'll need those gauges, totally agree. It just that in the mean time, I can wait awhile before forking out the cash for gauges. We are buying two rooms of furniture this week, so the gauges can wait, till at least summer!

Tell the wife you need the gauges before you haul the new furniture.

Most pods I've seen hold three gauges. What do you put in the third one when you run a 6-speed? I haven't been able to find a tranny temp gauge for a manual transmission.

One of my friends with a 6 speed is getting a 4 pod gauge from GOS racing i think. He is getting boost, pyro, oil pressure, and fuel pressure. Pretty cool, and my other friend has a 3 pillar gauge pod with water and oil temp and oil pressure. He also has the hypermax boost/pyro gauge and a steering column trans gauge. Let me tell you, that truck lights up and looks pretty cool at night. Personally, its too many gauges for me.
