My `92 F150 as far as I know did not come with a factory tow package . I put the hitch on (class 3-4 reese) ,along with an electric brake controller. The configuration with 302 , E4OD , 3.55 LS rears which is what this truck has , shows a maximum of 11500 pounds GCWR in the owner manual. I know what the GCWR , GAWR , GVWR mean, I need to know If the truck came factory with the 5 leafs , or is this an aftermarket addon? I have seen F150`s with only 3 leafs with no tow package , and 5 leafs with. My truck has 5. It tows our 4000# TT fine, braking is not "scary" and holds the road well with the equalizer hitch and sway control. We are looking to get a bigger trailer.
- Total weight of truck and trailer with me in it is 8970# .
- The , tongue weight is 355#.
- The GVWR of the truck is 6250#.
- Truck alone is 4800#.
I figure max trailer weight of 6500#, not a fifth wheel , due to the pin weight.
Are the stats for this truck good for what I see in the owner manual for towing?
I towed a trailer with a weight of around 6500 with a 2002 f-150 4x4 for a year and a half on weekends.(about 25 trips). I was overloaded!! I would fight going up hills, and i would fight going down them when trucks and busses would pass.(30'travel trailer). Just Upgraded to a 250 crewcab. Truck and trailer SOLID going down the road. Have only had one truck pass me so far at speed and I didnt even notice him until he was almost past me. Last year i would have had to countersteer truck. By the way, when I was loaded I was at or maby 100lbs over my gcwr. I dont know if this helped you or not but i know how stressful it can be with an overloaded 1/2 ton truck. Best of luck.
Other things that that tow package would have included are a transmission cooler and a bigger radiator. These too affect your tow rating. The frame and springs might be able to handle the weight, but if the engine and transmission overheat, you still have a problem.
The truck already had a double core rad in it, and I installed a HD trans. cooler. The truck does the job well , and handles well while towing. Maybe the long WB at 155" helps.
Thanks
