I bought a pair of cheap no-name chrome valve covers for my new long block 460. I got the engine in and all bolted up, I jumped across the solenoid to start it. As soon as the engine started turning over I noticed the valve covers flexing up and down as the rocker arms hit them.
My question is, if I buy the edelbrock classic valve covers will I get rid of this problem?
I had a set of Edelbrock valve covers on the truck I bought. The previous owner claimed he just put replaced the valve cover gaskets. The truck had a slight tapping noise, I just figured an old engine with a noisey lifter.....After about two weeks I had holes in the valve covers from the rocker arms. Disassembly showed that he had torqued them down HARD. Replaced the covers with a set of factory covers, no problems.
You might consider doubling up on gaskets to get a little more clearance -
I put Edelbrock signature series valve covers on my 84 460 stock motor and they worked just fine. Did you install roller rocker arms or something ? They shouldnt hit if its stock.
Obtuse, What are you referring to about the engine, when you state > Long Block?
A long Block To me:
it has always been an Engine Block that has been machined containing :
crank, piston, cam, heads, valve train, timing gears & chain cover.
(making the engine ready to receive an:
Intake manifold,carb,water pump,distributor,valve covers,exhaust manifolds,etc)
A short block is without the heads, valve train.
Just a machined & rebuilt bottom end block.
It sounds like you and me have the same definition of a long block.
This is a stock replacement long block nothing special. I put an Edelbrock performer manifold along with the performer 750 CFM carburetor, new timing cover, new water pump, new fuel pump, new oil pump.
The problem is since I spent all that money I decided to save money on the valve covers. I bought the cheapest new pair I could find on ebay.
Thanks,
John
I bought a set of cheap, chrome covers for my old '75 460 motorhome. They didn't hit, but they were unbaffled and the oil coming off a rocker arm got sucked right straight into the PCV valve. Whatever you get, make sure they have the baffles inside.
