I have a 85 F-150 w/ inline 6. My question is about the overdrive or 4th gear. Is it normally a dog or could something else be wrong? I have no acceleration in 4th and when I go up any kind of incline I have to down shift to 3rd. Also, any tips on getting the motor to run a little smoother. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor are new. thanks.

thats how you are suppossed to drive an overdrive.
only over 50-55
only one level strait roads
Its to save fuel on long, level, highway trips.
Your not suppose to accelerate in OD except maybe a gradual speed change (say 55 to 56).
as far as inclines, 1% grade and it comes out of overdrive.
as for smoothing out the engine, 300's hate vacuum leaks. check everything, the vacuum lines, the EGR mounting, the distributors vac advance

Its a manual so it doesnt come out of overdrive, and as for accelerating 55-56, well I would think it would give a little bit more. I have no vacuum advance on my distributor, but Ive bben reading about all the EGR problems others seem to have. Good Idea to change it?
I have the 4 speed with an OD (5speed). I only put it in OD if I am going 60mph or faster. It is a dog, but it will still slowly accelerate. If you have a tach, check out your RPM's when in 3rd or OD. I noticed with mine, at 70mph in OD I am right around 2000 rpm. In 4th, I am at around 2400 rpm's. At 60 mph, in OD my RPM's are at 1800, and it is a bit of a lug.
I have the same set up you do, and here in Florida it works pretty well, but that will not help you if you're in hilly country or try to use it it as a passing gear. if you want to pass someone, you will take it out of od cause thats not meant for passing ( the ratio is .78 i believe in od). it is great for what it is, a gas saver
