I purchased a 99 F-250 (v10) about 6 months ago. When purchased I was given a keyless entry remote and told that it needed a new battery. I replaced the battery but the remote still does not lock / unlock the doors. Does anyone know a way that I can make sure the truck really has keyless entry. My concern is that the remote I was given could possibly go to a different vehicle.
What you have is a remote control for an alarm system. It may be original equipment, dealer installed or after market. they all have remote door lock and unlock capability. A keyless entry option has a 5 button key pad on the drivers door and is a factory option. If you have the original paper work on the vehicle from the original owner it should have an instruction book for the system in you truck. If you do have a remote alarm, the the lock/unlock portion of the system can be turned on and off. Good luck.
I didn't think the keypad on the doors were available on the SD's. Especially a 99 model?? At least I've never seen one. My 99 factory key fob is 1.25"x1.5". It has 3 buttons, Side by side on top are (left) a lock closed icon and on the right side an un-lock icon. Below there is a red alarm button (icon indicates a horn blowing). Pressing this causes the horn to blow. It's not an alarm but emergency, panic type buttom.
If yours looks like this refer to the owners manual on how to reset the code. Maybe it got lost by the dead battery. I don't remember the sequence exactly but you have to hold the button and turn the key on or something. Check the manual.
Just remember if you get it working and you lock the doors while the truck is running...the keyless entry fob will not open the doors...found out as others ahve the hard way.
Good Luck.

Rob - Thanks for the informative post. My key fob is exactly like the one you described so I will go on the assumption that it does belong to my truck.
Next problem is that I purchased the truck 'pre-owned' on a Honda lot and they did not have the owners manual. Can anyone tell me the sequence for reprogramming the key fob?
Additionally, it comes to mind that I should probably check a fuse or something. Does the owners manual list a fuse number for the keyless entry system? I have removed and inspected each fuse under the dash and they all look good, so I don't think this is the problem, but it never hurts to double check.
(I will also work on getting an owners manual so that I will not have to burden the board with these types of questions)
Get the manual for sure, you'll need it for all the fuse confusion and everything else. My truck is in a park-in-ride lot now so I don't have the manual. I'll try to post the procedure this weekend.

To reprogram all transmitters, place the key in the ignition and turn it off to on eight times (within 10 seconds). After doors lock/unlock, press any control on all transmitters(up to four). When complete, turn the ignition to off.
All transmitters mjust be reprogrammed at the same time.
I have a 2000 F-250 SD,SC,LB,V-10,4x4,ORP,Lariat,3:73
The Lariat comes standard with a remote keyless entry; key word being remote. The remote locks and unlocks the doors, and nothing more. Unlike mrfix, the leyless entry IS via remote, and NOT a keypad. Have you taken it back to the dealer to see what is wrong with the remote? Perhaps the battery you put in was bad? Or take it to someone who does alarms, they can check and see what is up! I hope this helps.
Actually the problem was that my remote had lost its programming. With the assistance 'rob_n_houston', I was able to reprogram the key fob and it has been working ever since.
