Transfer case leaking
I have the shaft off, do I just have to remove that big nut?
anything else?
Thanks for any help!
The leak can come from the seal itself or from a rubber washer that is installed behind the nut that hold the yoke in place. In any case you need to replace that rubber washer whenever the nut is removed and reinstalled.
First, remove the front drive shaft (mark the orientation of the u-joints first). Then use a wrench to hold the transfer case yoke while you remove that large nut - it should be torqued to somewhere around 150 ft-lbs. I'd avoid use of an impact wrench if possible. Drain the fluid from transfer case before starting this job to avoid getting ATF fluid all over the place when the front yoke is removed.
The seal can removed and replaced using regular seal removal and installation tools. Reinstall the front yoke, the rubber shaft seal, flat washer and nut. Torque the nut to about 150 ft-lbs (check the appropriate manual for the exact number). Hold the front yoke with a wrench while tightening the nut.
Install the front driveshaft, fill the transfer case, and you should be done.
