alternators, one more time
I've been looking at the 63-amp internally regulated 63-amp GM alternators (i.e. 7127), or about $40 at autozone.
a) what happens with a 60 amp ammeter (dash gauge) when it's connected to a 63-amp alternator?
b) Will I ever see 63 amps with a 4000rpm redline? I know it probably depends upon the pulleys - I'm using a stock fan pulley and want to use an electric fan.
c) if I upgrade the headlights to 100/55 units, is the following correct?
fan: budgeting 15 amps
headlights: 100 * 2 = 200 watts / 12 volts = 16.66 amps
other lights: 50 watts / 12 volts = 4.25 amps
heater motor: 5 amps
"moderate" radio: 100 watts or about 8 amps
or roughly 50 amps worst case (fan on, brights on, heater motor on, radio blaring).

Just had this nice ammeter I wanted to reuse and it only goes to +- 60 amps. Haven't a clue what happens to it if I plug in a 63 amp alternator (or 85 or 100). To put my concerns into words, I guess, will it just peg out or will it MELT IN A FIERY INFERNO ?
From my calcs, I think 63 is fine for my needs, 85 and 100 have no real added value. OTOH, I can't say I'll never want a bright row of hella lights or a big electric winch on the front someday.
Man, I gotta be careful - almost typed wench.
