I am wondering what the gear ratios are in a 5 speed out of a 1996 F350 with a Powerstroke. Also what were available axle ratios in 1996, I was told 4.10s and 3.55s, 3.73s were NOT available, does this sound correct?
I would also like to know if the Powerstroke has a recommended cruise rpm range. High end and Low end.
I can help with the axles, in 96 3.73 was not an option, however you can buy the gears and put them in the pumpkin if you want. If you head over to the "Tech Articles" page of this website they have and Axle Code look up sheet. The Axle Code is location on the driver door threshold by the door handle. This way you can find out exactly what you have, unless someone swapped it out previously
I don't know the answers and you may have already done this, but...
you will get better results and more answers if you post to the Trucks section and/or Transmission section. Lots of helpful people there, and they are more likely to read your post there.
The section you are in is more for fun and anything else so I don't know if anyone serious will see your post.

The diesel ZF 5-speed tranny has the following ratios:
First: 4.14:1
Second: 2.37:1
Third: 1.42:1
Forth: 1.00:1
Fifth: 0.76:1
There is a gear ratio differance between the gas 5 spds. and the diesel 5 spds.
