Question Power Loss Hills

Lately my 97 Explorer XLT has been losing power on hills and idling roughly after driving for a period at high speeds and then coming to an off ramp and driving at low speeds. The remedy is usually to release the pedal and press it again. I have had the plugs, inlet manifold gaskets replaced, cleaned and checked the IAC, MAF. I have had a code of P1151 come up and disappear. Which indicates my passenger side O2 sensor has a lean switching condition. Dealers have tried to figure it out but they keep guessing and telling me to replace all sorts of things admittally without knowing themsleves. Is it just the O2 sensor or a sign of something else.

Sorry I did forget to mention the fuel filter and serpetine belt was replaced too during the 100k tuneup.

As 87 MArk sez it might be a clogged fuel filter or a clogged cat. Hook up a vacuum gauge & do the test for a clogged cat.

Well I found the problem, I have a stuck EGR, the introduction of recirc gas at idle and when the engine is loaded with wide open throttle on hills was causing the loping. Thanks for everyones help.

Yes replacing the EGR helped, but to determine it was this I ran the electrical and vacuum tests, I also replaced the DPFE, the sensor for the EGR system. I would run test on your vehicle before swapping out parts, it will become expensive quickly, and there are so many different causes for poor idling and power loss. Have you pulled any codes?

If its not the EGR system, it wont hurt to replace that O2 sensor, they last about 60k, unless there dirty from road conditions. You can try replacing the O2 sensor yourself, it will cost about 50 in parts for Bosch, and will take a couple of hours. It is in a real difficult place to get to, you have to take wheel of and splashguards, wiring is tucked up behind engine. I had to heat mine to get it out. Mine made no difference when I replaced it so thats when I checked the EGR.

I made a mistake in my original post when I said the passenger side, the P1151 is the drivers side Bank two opposite cylinder one
