LAST EDITED ON 03-Jul-01 AT 07:35 PM (EST)[p]I am looking at the 2001 Super Duty. I would like to get a 2wd Super Cab F-250 with automatic and I was wondering if the 5.4 is a good engine for this truck. What is the MPG of this truck with the 5.4?
You need to think about what you plan on doing with the truck. Is it a daily driver, some trips with no load? You thinking about buying a boat or trailer? Will you tow and how much? I don't see to many with the 3.73 gears. Most opt for the 4.10's. Some say they have plenty of power for their needs. Expect mpg to be in the 12-14 range city and 14-16 range hwy. Even though it has a smaller engine, it has to work just a bit more to move the truck. That's why the mpg figures aren't great. Some V10's with 3.73 gears get the same mileage.
So, if you just want a big truck to drive around, haul small loads and tow up to 6000lbs, a 5.4 V8 would prolly be OK. Anything more I'd get the V10 with 3.73's and a lot more get the V10/4.30 gears or a Power Stroke Diesel.
I have a 2001 F250SD w/5.4 and 4:10 rear. For my purposes the truck has plenty of power. The truck is mainly used as my daily driver with the occasional heavy load thrown in. I have no complaints. I also plan to use the truck for snow plowing in the winter and from what I can tell now it seems as if it will have ample power for that as well. However, if I were hauling or pulling heavy loads on a daily basis then I might consider the larger V10. With only 1200 miles on my truck so far I dont yet have the full picture of MPG. Currently I am averaging about 12.8 MPG but I also live in a very hilly area so you might find better numbers if you have a better driving terain. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. I plan to use it mostly as a daily driver and to haul some light loads. It seems like the 5.4 should be able to handle that just fine.
I owned a 99 Super Duty with the 5.4 v-8. Nothing but problems. At 30,000 miles, the engine had to be swapped. The new 5.4 was just as bad. The only heavy thing i did with it was snow plow. I was very disappointed with the power of that engine when i had the plow hooked up. I currently own a 01 Super Duty with the v-10. I am very happy with that. Plenty of power and the same gas mileage. [12 mpg around town, 16 mpg on highway] Plus, it's only a 600.00 or so option.
