I just replaced the fuel filter on my '03 Expy. The only tools you need are your fingers! There are three fittings that have collars that just pull back and the filter pulls right out. Is it supposed to be this way? GREAT ENGINEERING IMHO, or am I just really strong or really lucky?
BTW, the filter is located on the frame rail, drivers side near the back door. It is covered by a black plastic cover. It took me longer to figure how to remove the cover than it did to change the filter!

They may have changed the fasteners since '98, because you cannot get the filter off without a tool on mine. The clamps do loosen, but the filter will not pull away from the hoses. It was stipulated earlier in this thread that the tool I mentioned (I think) is necessary to disconnect the lines. Your '03 may be an improved version over what I have to deal with.
I have a freind who is a Ford mechanic and he said to be very careful when replacing the fuel filter on the Expy's. A little pressure in the wrong direction can screw up the barbs that hold the filter in place. The end result, a whole new fuel line from the tank to the filter or from the filter to the engine. I don't think he's BS'ing me cause he changes mine at the shop for free.

Has anyone replaced their filter per the procedure that "shakespearesdad" did? After digging through several pages, this is the only one I found that didn't need a tool!
I've bought the 1st tool (recommended one) and have had a hell of a time in removing the fuel filter. At risk of breaking it off (or one of the barbs) I am asking you all if there is anything but brute force that will remove it... the books that I have say nothing but to the effect of it'll come off after inserting the removal tool. I say B.S. to that! For the night I have packed-it-up and reinstalled the locking (exterior) clips so no gas spills or anything, but if you can shed some light on removing a REALLY stubborn fuel filter, I'd surely appreciate it. Thanks.
While pushing the tool into the fuel line, use your other hand to push the fuel line onto the tool. This will take the tension off the spring clips and let them release easily.
