Is anyone familiar with the carbon canister? My '85 f-150
has got a few holes in the top of it.The repair manual says to replace it if theres any damage to it.What are the symptoms
of a bad or cracked canister? Will a new one make the truck run
better? The truck does stall on occasion. The PCV valve tends to gunk- up fom time to time but I think that's another matter.
On my 460, guess it works the same on other engines,I think all the canister does is filter gas fumes. The lines going to it on my truck are from the vent lines from the carb, also the vent lines from the tanks. It is supposed to filter out the gas vapors so they don't release into the atmosphere. Don't think it should affect the way the truck runs, but the fitting going into mine is broken off, so I don't know if it was stopped up completely what it would do. Hope this helps
That carbon cannister collects gasoline fumes when the truck is not running. Once you are running again, the fumes are metered into the engine. Translation: smog device.
If the cannister's plastic housing has a couple of holes in it, just patch them with something that is relatively fuel resistant. I'd avoid silicone based adhesives if possible.
