Hello , I have a 86-F150 302 5.0 automatic 4-wheel drive. My truck started in the fall time. But this last month I can not get it to start. Got a new battery , starter solenoid ,starter ( burned the old one out trying to start it ) ,cleaned all the connections , spark plugs , wires and got new fuses. Now I notice the fuel pump is not working ,( I could hear it working before ) no click no nothing .I replaced the relay (nothing ) Then I replace the fuel pump (still nothing ) I also had replaced the fuel filter ( along the frame ) It has a single tank only.Could there be something I am over looking or is this definitely a wiring problem. Thank You
Slade , Yes I am getting spark. I get it to run for about 5 sec. after spraying starter fluid into it. I used 3 cans so far. Tried fresh gas (about 3 gal ). This is my second work truck. I need to get it going soon . Spring is near , I have a small construction business.
Your fuel pump should have a connection at the negative battery cable... check that, it might be loose or corroded, and not allowing the pump to come on when the key is turned.
Do these trucks have a fuel pump reset switch? If so that might be tripped, i don't know where it would be...but i think some of them had it.
Then again, there might be a problem with the computer onboard, but i doubt that.
Have you checked to see if you have batt power to the fuel pump with the key on? Can you hear the pump relay 'click' when you switch on the key? You might also check power to the relay, control and power sides, and if you dont have one get a wiring diagram instead of going jumping into this blind.
desperado , I do not see any wires going to the negative battery cable. I do see two wires on the positive cable on the solenoid.I also see a couple of wires that look like they need to be connected somewhere . Somebody did some cob job wiring underneath the hood it is a mess . I am trying to follow and sort out some of these wires with not much luck. I did change the fuel pump relay. Is this the same as the the fuel pump switch that you had mention ? Phinxter , The pump does not have power. I do not hear a click. I think that it may be a wire or wires between the relay and the battery to the relay . desperado had mention the negative battery cable having a wire on it. I am getting close to fixing this thing . Thanks a bunch guys !!!
desperado , You are the man . I hooked up one of the loose wires under the hood to the negative battery cable. There also was a wire under my dashboard that was loose . When I connected both of these wires in their propper place, I could hear the fuel pump working. I turned the key a bunch of times ( without turning the engine over ) to get gas to the engine. She started right up , no problem. If I could I would take you guys out for a beer .Thanks for the help all
