Question 390 differences

Hi all
I am getting ready to buy a reman 390 for my truck but I want to make sure that I buy the right one. My truck is a 1971 f250 4x4 with a 4 speed manual transmission. The engine that I currently have is 390.
My main question is, will a 390 for a 1974 f250 work with my 1971?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The intake may be different but the engines themselves are identical. Should work perfectly.

Thank you. I just wanted to make sure before I spend the money. Do you know of any good places online to buy a reman engine? I am looking at ATK right now but they want $1699 w/free shipping. Is that a good price for a long block?

That sounds reasonable. A friend just bought one from Auto Zone for that same price and it didn't last 2 days. Check their return rate on their engines and learn all you can about their warranty policies. The aforementioned engine that died, was only covered to a total of $400.00 that's labor and all. It cost over $800.00 to repair all the damage. My friend got stuck with the rest.

I have read on one of the thread in the FE engine forum..thats where you should post this for better results!!

But from what I have read in that forum..is that 72 and up had a slight fixed retard in the timing gears/chain..

And that makes a difference in performance!!
I sure one of the Guru's will correct me if thats wrong

And can probably explain it better than I..Good Luck!! Russ

I'd far rather find a local shop with a good reputation and have them build the engine, rather than buying a preassembled one. That way, if you have problems, you have local assistance. If you have problems with a preassembled one, you have to pull it and send it back to them.
