Been having a problem lately when Truck sits overnight. It will go into reverse to back out the driveway and then when I go to put it in OD to take off...it goes nowhere, then shift it up and down on the selector and nothing in any gear. Put it back in drive again and give it a slow amount of throttle and away it goes for the rest of the day. I have noticed that when approaching a stop light or such, it will make a slight clunk as it downshifts late into low gear...not always, but sometimes. It seems like something sticking like...then all of a sudden it grabs gear and it drives and shifts ok. It has 244,000 KM and a new motor so I want to keep it a while yet...I flushed the tranny fluid, replaced the filter, and added a bottle of Lucas treatment when this started to happen, but its still doing the same thing. I am pretty mechanically inclined and have tools...is something I should check, or possible causes?
Thanks.
Lost the modulator once due to a backfire blowing the diaphram in it. It allowed the vacuum to suck out a good deal of fluid. Check for this by pulling the vacuum line to the transmission at the tree and look inside for fluid. But if you have been keeping an eye on the fluid level and have not had to add any this is probably not the case.
But I would consider replacing the modulator for a start.
-------------------
Because of this lose of fluid I did manage to burn up my OD. I could run in anything else as long as I didn't stop the selector in OD. If I did I had to go back to park and wait for the RPM's to come down and go for reqular drive.
Just my $.02. Good luck and keep me posted.

As a matter of fact, I did have problems with the truck stalling before...twice and both times there was a few hoses fell off that tree...they were oily and I replaced the PCV and cleaned them and put them back on...truck ran good after that. How do you go about replacing the modulator? where is it? is it expensive item and is something I could replace myself. Thanks
I think it is a do yourself. Heatshield is hardest part for me. Not expensive. If caught in time can save thousands of $'s.
Vacuum Diaphragm (modulator)- located right side of transmission. Has the vacuum line on it, just above the fluid pan.
The heat shield must be removed first
Then remove the vacuum line and remove the bolt and retaining clamp. Pull the diaphragm out of the transmission case.
Remove the control rod (small rod that fits in modulator but will stay in transmission case sometimes).
Install in reverse order.
Also, you may want to replace oil soaked vacuum lines.
Hope this helps and good luck.
