I just bought Galaxy427's 1990 Eddie Bauer. I have plenty of things to fix however. Here are my main issues.
1. It usually idles very low and lopes around and dies until it is warmed up. The check engine light came on when driving home, but i havent had a chance to check for codes. There is a stong tear jerking smell too. I am thinking fuel pressure regulator (i think i smell gas in the oil too.)
2. The 4x4 light is stuck on. i dont know if it is actually stuckin 4hi or not. The steering is also really bad. He said that it might be a broken hub, but what are the symptoms of that.
If the 4x4 is stuck on, then that could cause heavy steering. How exactly is the steering? Does it wander or just feel "heavy"? If it's pushbutton and it's stuck in 4WD, then it's really easy to take the transfer case motor off and fix it. I did mine in about 30 minutes. The link to that is: http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/tcase.html
It's easier than it looks. The travel stop on the back of the wheel breaks apart sometimes. A small piece of rubber hose will work in its place.
If one of the auto hubs is bad, then just replace them with manuals. Warn or Mile Marker will work. Warn hubs can be had on Ebay for around $40.
As for the idle, have you pulled the codes? Check out: http://www.broncodata.com/tech/codes.htm
Thanx for the info. It is not a push button 4wd shift. The steering wanders..but when i make a turn it tends to keep pulling and I have to use some muscle to get the wheels back to straight
ok lets go back to the engine. Today it started like usual..and then bogged out as usual. Now i cant get it to start anymore.
I did a compression check on a couple cylinders and they had high compression.
I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and cranked the engine and got 40 psi. It did not stay up at 40 very long and the pressure lowered. I know this could be injectors or fpr or something but i would think the motor would start.
There is definetly some gas in the oil as well.
Want to get this baby running. Someone point me in the right direction??
Check your fuel pressure regulator; they tend to go out. It's the metal thing with the vacuum line on the back of the fuel rail on the driver side. Pull the vacuum line and see if there's gas in there. If so, replace the regulator.
