Iam young lady with no knowledge at all on 4x4 and I have a 93' explorer and its at the shop because it was making very loud noise in the front ( cluncking) and the steering wheel was pulling left then right then one time it moved side to side real fast (while driving) Had to go real slow. It would also make the clunck noise while turning. They told me that the 4x4 auto hub is not disengaging all the way, and that the spring that disengages it is gone..They also found that the 4x4 button in the truck did not allways put it in 4x4. I have never seen the light never come on. But i have noticed that after going out of 4x4 (reverse for 20 feet) that the noises start up. Do you think that even backing up 20 feet that one hub is not disengaging? They used to not be bothersome and would only happen while turning sometimes. but now it happens everytime i drive it even if its just to pull off the road and not even a real turn. OOO yah also while driving straight i can hear a rubbibg sound while not in 4x4.
they said that they called ford and they were told i need to buy the whole kit $350 each!!!! Cant i just buy this spring somewhere?? AND do you think that this is the only problem. They put in new ball joints and tightened a wheel bearing last month. Please help me so I dont spend money that I dont even have.
I would think your shop is a little high, and skewed. Heres a model and price of Warn Manual hubs for the '93 Explorer. You can order them and have just about any shop put them in. Should cost much less than trying to fix the original, while giving you a better, more reliable product. Yes, the link below is the price for the pair.
ya installing manual hubs is a great thing. The auto ones break really easily. and you won't have to back up once you get outta 4 wheeldrive......HOWEVER you might still have another problem besides the broken hub.....they said your 4x4 isn't always working which means that they will prolly have to fix that too and that could be pretty expensive prolly too.

sounds to me like it is your t-case AND your hubs! which really sucks! the newer t-cases with electronic crap on it gets to be mighty expensive!
Thanks yall this info helped out. I told the garrage to not touch a thing that i need to look into it. Good thing i found this site or i would prolly just be real broke. I hate being a woman (sometimes) ya know some try to pull a fast one on us!! thanks again Ill let ya know what happens.
