In September my right front wheel assembly was loose, wheel could be shaken. January, same to the left front. Now, after a 200+ wheelin trip, my right front is loose again, but worse. Is this the retainer nut working loose because of the extended recent wheelin?
no....your locknuts in the front that holds the hub assembly to the spindle is prolly messed up. you know there are 2 locknuts and a washer that goes b/t them. you have a small nipple on one of the lock nuts which is your inner. then you have to get the nipple into one of the many holes in the washer. then you must tighten down the outer locknut to keep everything tight. I had problems with this b/c the nipple on the inner was broke off and it was loosening itself!
You really do have to torque these things on ALL Fords to factory specs. I have owned a lot of Fords and worked on a lot of them and most every problem with loose front wheels are do to two things. #1 improper torque. #2 Big wheels at high speed without a proper alignment.
The right side usually goes first and loosens up because it receives the most abuse from pot holes and such.
I do not have a manual for a 1991 in front of me, but, if it says to torque the nut on at 40 pounds, and back it off 1/4 turn, then that is exactly what you should do. And if it says to put the outer on at 90 then that is what you should do. Follow the factory specs. I make sure I am spinning the rotor while gradually applying torque to seat the bearings. fwiw.
Once again, you all got it right.
My mechanic fixed it last time. I told him the story. Turns out it was the inner nut has tabs to bend in place to hold the nut tight. He said the factory hadnt set the tabs, nor had he last time he fixed it. This time he did set the tabs. Since it shouldnt have been an issue, I got a break on the already low price.
Thanks guys.
