IDI questions

Hi All,

Is there a good book or manual on the operation of a 94 IDI turbo?

I keep an eye on ebay looking for manuals and see some every now and then on pre 94 IDI diesels. Are these the same as a '94?? I was under the impression that the 94 was some kind of special engine year.

I would really like to get a manual that explains what is going on in there exactly. Like, where exactly is this pre-combustion chamber? Sounds like the intake valve lets the pre-combustion chamber fuel charge into the cylinder.

Does the glow plug warm the cylinder or the pre-combustion area.

What is this valve train saddle that I've hread of that is prone to cracking?

Inquireing minds would like to know. I've got the gas engine stuff down pretty well but this diesel stuff is intimidating.

You are correct in that the 94 year was special. They (Ford) offered three different engines in that year (diesel wise).

First was the IDI Non turbo
Second was the IDI Turbo
Third was the PowerStroke.

You can get manuals from www.helminc.com or as you have been doing keep an eye on fleabay.

The glow plug warms up the cylinder from inside the pre-combustion chamber, which is located in the head, the injector also injects fuel into the pre combustion chamber. The valve opening is out side of the pre-combustion chamber though...

http://www.samantha.cc/Truck/cavitation.html if you pull up this website you will see where Eric took a picture from underneath the block looking up towards the head. he had the valves out but you can see half of the pre-combustion chamber.

Thanks - that helps a lot.

From those pictures I can surmize that the input valve only lets in an air charge, is that correct? The fuel charge is in that little chamber between the valves and I guess goes into the actual cylinder as a result of the injector firing, getting warmed up, so to speak, as it passes the glow plug.

Does tha sound right?

Since the combustion chamber is always open to the cylinder that is why you can take a compression reading from the injector hole.

Follow up question on IDI turbo. Is a manual for a '93 or earlier IDI turbo worth getting? Is it the same as a '94 IDI Turbo or is the '94 IDI turbo a unique animal?

Thanks for the help
Tom

Yes that is correct, that is because a diesel uses compression ignition so only the air is compressed then the fuel is injected into the cylinder. So yes the intake valve only lets air in.

The 93 and 94 IDI engines are basically the same. The wiring will be so close that you could fudge it when preforming repairs if you picked up an older service manual.

Most of the time you take your compression readign from the glow plug hole not the injector hole. I have not ran across an adapter that fits the injector hole yet. All adapters are for GP.

Cool - so things like torque settings, dimensions and other things mechanical will be the same. Great - thanks - that'll be a great help right there.

head bolt torque is off a little. The turbo models require a little more torque... Pick up a haynes manual for that... but most other stuff you can fudge...

The 6.9 IDI and 7.3 IDI are almost identical motors.
The 7.3 IDI and the 7.3 IDI turbo are still the same motor, one just has a turbo.

The only difference between any of them is the bore is different between the 6.9 and 7.3.

The head torques are different for each of the three.

I think there is a small diff in the rods between the factory 7.3turbo and the 7.3 non turbo.

Correct... The wrist pin diameter was larger on the turbo engine, this caused the rod to be different and the piston as well. They also coated the piston to deal with the extra heat of being worked harder. Then they also updated the valves with a coating as well, which also changed the seats...
