Wasn't that the REAL reason to prosecute her in the first place? I'd certainly think twice about doing something like that, especially if I were a high-profile person.

Remember, this is a mostly male forum. She does have a large female following. If they feel they are treating Martha unfairly, they may cause such a fuss that she doesn't see the jail time expected.I think we will see a lot of the womens groups jumping on this one. It's too early to call how this will play out.It could be interesting.

For the crime, who was hurt (mostly herself), the amount of money involved, and everything else I would give her probation on the condition of community service for 300 hours. She has already lost 500+ million dollars. Her worse crime was lying, not selling the $50,000 stock on an inside tip. Assuming she is guilty, one of the two witnesses are not exactly what I would call credible.

wasnt sure about the dollar amounts, but still think she should at least get the max fine, and more than a couple of years in a federal prison.

If I'm drinking and driving and have an accident where no one gets hurt but me, then I am still guilty of drinking and driving. I would still do jail time and if I did what she did with half the money involved I would more than likely get a lot more time than her. I'm sick of double standards for the wealthy and the rest of us. She should do jail time for the principle of the matter even if it is only 1 year.
She lost half her fortune because of greed and that isn't punishment for a crime.
Again, that is like saying, "Hey, the drunk driver already lost his car in the accident, that should be enough punishment for the crime."

How Martha Stewart is dealt with will set a precident for future cases.

GotLift your enology is enlightening from a unique point of view, she still committed a crime.
I try to understand this compassion for her, that some have…….

> I would still do jail time

I have lived or owned property in ME, MA, NH, and GA and in those states, and I suspect others, people do not go to jail for thier first offense of drunk driving, even when there is an accident. This was Martha's first offense and her biggest crime was lying!

In MA, you can wipe out a whole family drunk driving with multiple DUIs and a revoked license, be a nanny that shakes a baby to death, rape and molest children, and not even get five years of jail time in a min. security prison.

My cousin and a friend were each killed by drunk drivers (two different accidents) and the people did not do jail time. Martha's crime of lying falls far short of any of the above crimes where people did not go to jail for felonies that actually killed people.

Martha got convicted of lying. To lock up a productive member of society, just because she is rich, while we let scum of the earth walk around because there is no room for them in jail, is unjust and short sighted. imo.

I agree rebocardo that the system is out of whack, but that does not mean Martha should get a lesser sentence. It means the other offenders should get a harsher sentence. I am also very sorry for your losses.

You will never see the faces of the people hurt in this case, it is too complex - but people have their retirement and prosperity on the line. Rest assured there were victims. I believe she did commit insider trading even though they were not able to convict her of it.
