I have a 85 f150 with a 2 1/2 inch lift and I want to do the sas. I have pretty well everything I need but I read that I need at least a 4 inch lift. What I was wondering is I also read that with some mods I can use the 85 bottom spring seat and by doing that I get more lift and what I'm asking is do you think that I would have enough clearence with the 2 1/2 inch springs or would I be better off to spend the money and get the 79 4 inch coils.
My advice would be to go with the '78/79 coils (4"). I would actually feel more comfortable going with the 6" coils. You will need to be careful with the axle bumping the engine crossmember at compression. You could always modify (cut and reinforce) the crossmember and still use the 2-1/2" coils. But I think that would be tight.
With mine, I set the axle as forward as reasonably possible (only about an inch forward of center), but I also have 11-12" in the front. You may also need to make some custom bends on your trackbar to clear the crossmember. And don't forget the trackbar frame mount. I have seen them welded and bolted. Mine is bolted to the bottom of the frame and has a kicker going to the crossmember and bolted there. I don't plan on having any problems there.
Anyway, good luck and let us know if we can help with any further ideas/concerns.
