to much axles?

I have a 78 f-150 with a stock dana 44 and 9inch under it right now. It has a 9inch lift with 3inch body, 460 with 40 inch tires. I want to step up to a bigger axle in the rear and maybe in the front. I only drive the truck on the street now so i wasnt sure if i should go with a set of dana 60s or if thats to much axle, or would it make more sence to put a 60 in the rear and a 44 in the front.

Basically, I am surprised that those half ton axles are holding up with 40" tires. But they probably wont for long. Rule of thumb, you can never have too much axle. Especially with 40" tires.

A Dana 60 is no stronger than a 9 inch, and you lose less power through the drive line with the 9 inch. The only problem with the Dana 44 is the small pinion spline diameter. If you feel it neccesary to change axles, get a Dana 60 High Pinion(late 70's F-2/350's) for the front, and leave the nine inch in there. The reason I say this is the fact that the Dana 44 and 9 inch combination withstand over 650 hp, and friends of mine run over 800 through the same axles. But ultimately, the decision is your's. Good luck.

showtimes, do you plan on doing any offroading or are you going to stick to pavement?

If you stick to pavement, the 44/9 will hold up indefinitely. You'll chew up ball joints, but you probably know that.

If you want to wheel your truck, find a HP D60 for the front and drop a Sterling or D70 out back. You'll be golden.
