hey all,
i an getting ready ready to change my transmission fluid in my 02 -V-10 cc.4x4, w/ 34000 miles on it, any way I just purchased a FT-114 yc3z-78098-BA screen asy.But was wondering the correct method/ sequence , I have done quit a few search'es however, when draining, (i have a drain nut) then what? i have read to remove the plastic/rubber cover on the torque converter but it's solid, so do i just add what i took out( MERCON and only Mercon), some places said oh! yer werk'in the hell out of the truck put in mercon v, ah.ah no.nono. read the book just mercon!so i am not going to do a flush or hook up to any machine's so do i just drain , remove pan replace screen asy. clean magnet and fill? Thank you all for your input.
I'm getting ready to change mine too, but I'm a little afraid to use Mark's method of using the transmission pump to pump out the fluid until you see air. It sounds a little like you may be running it dry. Any thoughts? Mine's a 200, so I do have a drain plug on the torque converter. Thought I may just let it drain all day and see what I get.

If you don't like the idea of pumping until you see bubbles, do what I did. I marked the bucket I was pumping into at a gallon
level. So I would pump out a gallon, shut it down, and fill with
a gallon of new ATF. After pumping out the 3rd gallon, I dropped the pan, cleaned everything up, installed a new filter, and topped it off with new ATF....It worked well!!!

He helped design the transmission. I don't think he'd steer you wrong.
OK, went by Napa got 20 quarts ATF-Mercon/dextron, home i went. never done this b-4 so i got my directions( thank you monsta) removed center plug on pan forgot the size 11, 12 mm, got appx 7quarts and 1-1/2 pints out of the pan. Then removed appx 20....10mm bolts, ( very easily i may say) pulled down the pan and for the first time i saw the under-body of a V-10 TRANNY!what ever that orange plastic plate is ? i don't wanna touch.Anyway cleaned pan and the magnet which seems to thread in w/ the drain bolt( did not know that) installed new filter, and ya'll are right that orange o-ring stays up in there. Installed pan and poured in appx 7quarts and 1 1/2 pints,i have to mention that when putting back the 10 mm bolts Don't be in a rush ,they don't seem to be torqued down to much and i might have stripped one .....i REMOVED THE COOLER LINE W/ A 16 MM wrench , i kinda rigged my hose However, i will be better prepared next time craned the engine and watched till i saw the air , i was kina of Freakin so when i saw the air i shut off the engine buttoned everything up measured what i got and poured 7 more quarts of Vavloine ATF BACK IN cleaned up the area and then went through the gears slowly a few times checked for leaks ,took a short drive around the block and thats it.
Now on to the fuel filter w/ that special tool. Should i buy a Ford fuel filter? then after that coolant flush , i have the gold , the book says it can go for 50.000 i beleive but i thinf 35 to 38 is better. Thanks all.
I went and my transmission serviced today and I was told by the mechanic that there was no difference in the mercon and the mercon V. And to make a long story short I let them put in the mercon V. Will this cause in problems? If so, I'll be back there tomorow making them correct the problem. Hope somebody out there can help me out. And what is the difference in the two. Thanks in advance.

If you read Mark's tech article, the only transmission that it's ok to use Mercon V in, is the 4R70W. You did not state what transmission you have???
I will have to agree strongly w/ Casey and Bob Ayers, i have read the owners manual over , called a couple of stores , and got on the FTE forum. The people here will help you and point you in the correct direction, One of the auto part stores even tried to sell me mercon V which i THINK is synthetic. All i know is that these trannys dont liked to be messed w/ to much, you know useing blended fluid or adding Mercon V w/ mercon. Hope all goes well , have them drain and flush that tranny coolerline and even have them read the manual.
