Checking fuel pressure

I will be doing this soon and have a question. My manual says the pressure should be lower by 3 to 10 psi from when the key is just turned on. It says if the pressure did not drop to apply 10 inches of vacuum to the pressure regulator. If the pressure drops repair the vacuum source to the regulator. How do I apply this pressure to the regulator and when I do this do I just unplug this vacuum until the test is done? Thanks for any help.

With the vacuum line hooked up to the regulator, the pressure should drop off as the regulator "sees" the engine vacuum. If the pressure doesn't drop off, then that means the regulator can't "see" the engine vacuum. Of course, the question is, is the vacuum line plugged between the regulator and the vacuum tree or has the regulator lost its ability to "see" engine vacuum. So you disconnect the vacuum line at the regulator and plug it, hook up your own vacuum source (hand or other vacuum pump) and apply vacuum to the regulator. If the regulator can see your vacuum but not the engine vacuum, then the fault lies in the vacuum line or there's some other fault in engine vacuum. While you have the vacuum line disconnected and a vacuum gauge on hand, go ahead and measure engine vacuum while you're at it.
Hope that answers your question.

Thanks mrshorty. I have the manual but sometimes they are a little vague with their info. I guess if they werent the manual would be twice as thick. LOL. That was exactly what I was wondering. Thank you.

you don't need to go through all that, just start it up look at the pressure reading, then punch the throttle the pressure should go up about 5 psi for a couple seconds.
